Wheel Bearings and Warranty

Featured Replies

Hi,

This is my first post (although I've been lurking for a while :) )

Got my 54 plate Furby VRs at the beginning of the year (not from Skoda dealer though) and duly sent away my changes in keeper/warranty card but never heard anything back  .

It appears my front wheel bearings are on the way out after 35k and was wondering if I will still be covered. Do they class wheel bearing issues as wear and tear?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :)

Hi Mate

No the front and rear wheel bearings will be covered by warranty.

Make sure you have OEM alloys on there and all should be good.

They may decline to accept it if it's been lowered.

Technically wheels bearings will come under the wear and tear side of the warranty conditions BUT if you believe that the wheel bearings have worn excessively and prematurley due to a manufacturing defect within the bearing you should be able to get them covered under warranty. At the end of the day though it will be down to your local dealer's opinion.....

Hi

I have changed many many whell bearings front and rear under warranty , the only things I could see affecting the claim , is the wheels , I know that larger alloys will weigh more and that will be taken in to account.

Also high mileage , it used to be 60k ish for the suspension , but I would have theough that the wheel bearings I would have thought should be higher mileage to invalidate warranty

I know there was many many issues with wheel bearings not long after the car was launched in march 2000 but then the part was superceeded , but I do not know if the issues are the same

Cheers for the replies. What about the warranty card thing? Has anybody had any probs with skoda not transferring a warranty to the new owner?

My front offside wheel bearing was changed under warranty although the service manager moaned a bit because the brakes had been upgraded.... My arguement was that if the wheel bearing can go at 16k on a 7 month old car then there must be something wrong with it.

Thats said wheel bearings are one of the most stressed components fitted to the car and 35k for a failure whilst not typical isn't that bad. I have fitted bearings to various cars and only 2-3k out of them because I either fitted them poorly or they were just crap.

Even if you don't get it under warranty it's not the end of the world interms of cost the parts is about

This shouldn't matter one bit. Its not really that necessary when the vehicle is under the remaining manufacturers warranty. Also when you take the vehicle into a main dealer they should update all the records on the Skoda database for change of ownership if it doesn't already come up with your mane and details.

I sent my transfere of warranty / owner card off when i aquired my 53 plate Octy. I never heard anything back, but my dealer said, not to worry as its covered up to the warranty from new. I think its used more, to get your details on the skoda database.

how do you know when your wheel bearings are on there way out, does it make a noise?

Yes, you'll hear a sort of 'drone'. It gets louder the worse the bearing gets. I was at Star Performance today for a service and got them to check it out, it's definately the front near side bearing that's away:( but I'm gonna try and get it fixed under warranty so fingers crossed.

It is the car that is covered under warranty , not about who owns it.

You should be ok

I have heard a bit of a screeching noise when turning the wheel left, and I think I heard a knocking at one point, is this the wheel bearing? or something else?

That could be a CV joint. Try full lock in reverse, if the knock is there then thats what it will be.

Both my front wheel bearings failed within 60 miles of each other @ 27000 miles back in January 06 (2003 Octy Vrs) 3 days before the warranty ran out, took it to my local dealer (Robert Bamfords of Gloucester), they had it in within 3 days and replaced them without any quibbles at all, so a big thumbs up for them. As regards to the warranty card I sent mine off when I bought the car (May 04 with 9000mls) and never recieved anything back, but I've had no problems with any claims, as on the database I am the registered owner.
