Slow coolant leak - radiator plug?

Featured Replies

Hi all - thank goodness I've found you!

I have a slow (i.e topping up every couple of weeks) coolant leak in my X reg Fabia. This has happened before and the dealer (Merritts Aylesbury - generally very happy with them) suggested that this was a common problem caused by an ill-fitting plug (?) in the radiator. They replaced the plug (this was at least 18 months ago) and the coolant was steady for a long while. Now it's started disappearing again. Having done a car maintenance course (very basic I hasten to add!)since then I'm keen to try and fix this myself but having had a peer around with a torch around the radiator and left newspaper under the engine bay etc I'm still no closer to finding the source of the leak.

Any thoughts on where I might find this "plug"?

Cheers,

Richard

I think it's the cooling fan temp switch that leaks. It's also screwed into the radiator.

Yup, that's what it was on mine, bottom left (NSF) of radiator. Apart from the dropping coolant, mine became noticable by the undertray appearing a little wet and then I noticed pink crusting on the tray and around the switch.

Cost me £12 to get fixed as the car was in for a service and the mechanic just took it out, cleaned it up and fitted a new seal, can't complain at that, coolant level has been solid ever since. :)

Thats where mine was leaking too , fixed under warranty , as colkai says it is the rubber seal on said switch which is the problem , and It should be a doddle for your dealer to sort!

i seem to remember something about a core plug leaking on the water pump on the 1.4mpi models????

Took to dealer today - after an hour they said they couldn't find leak despite pressure testing??? I've had to top it up 3 times in the last month? What's going on?

Any thoughts anybody?

They did say that if it goes down again they'll look at it again FOC and I do understand that sometimes the car doesn't read the workshop manual but ....???

slightly disturbed.

Is the water clean and free from oil? Do you have white 'mayonnaise' under your oil filler cap? Im just wondering if your head gasket could be away?
