My brother has just bought himself a new gfx card.. (not content with a 7800gt)

A MOFO of a twin-slot card... a Nvidia 8800GTX..

this thing has 768mb of video memory... and cost almost

11916.attach

jesus! that's huge!

It is about as fast as two 1950 XT's i heard.

Why did he butcher your PC, surely he should have purchased himself a new mobo and PSU.

Anyway that thing only takes up one PCIe x16 slot, so why would he need more when he has a 7800GT anyway.

He has newish stuff.. but his PSU doesnt have dedicated PCI-e power rails like my enermax has.. (the 8800gtx requires TWO of them)

again.. im not sure what the point of him buying it was... after all hes still limited to 1280x1024 on his tft panel!.. and the 7800gt is capable of max everything even at 1600x1200 on modern games

yeah, but at what FPS?

I bet that 8800 rocks. I cannot find any unoffical benchmark test result from the net yet, may be your brother can make one!?

Colin, you should hold on to it for evaluation purposese, after all, it's your PC :)

(ive no idea how my bro can afford this.. hes a student!!)

You seen the GROMACS core in FAH?

I know it exists. Can it use these procs?

whats the point? a £500 video card, to make the best of that your gonna need a monster system costing 2 grand and with that money you could have bought a 42" plasma, an xbox 360 and a cheap dell for looking on the web :D

Well if your going to be specific.. a Core2 is only more efficent than a AMD when its on full tilt.. Im happy with what ive got at the mo.. i *may* get a cheap skt 939 dual core to help with vmware... other than that im not in a hurry... i can always O/C anyway ;)

I would love to see the benchmarks on that, see how it compares to my SLi 7950GX2 setup, which is excessive enough :-) 1920 x 1200 everything whacked up to full and still getting silly frame rates.

Is it me though, or does the release of new PC games seem to be slowing down? Prey was the last 3d shooter I bought that was good, Company of Heroes is the dogs danglies at the moment though. Anything new on the horizon? BF2142 is pretty poor.

I can't do shooters on the 360 and graphic's wise GRAW (Ghost recon advanced warfighter) looks poo on the 360 compared to the PC. I must admit I luurrrrve slicing through zombies on dead rising though :D:thumbup::D

I think hes based his decision for the gfx card in wait for DX10 and CRYSIS... (which does look pretty awesome but wont be out for ages)

and SPORE, which looks to be the best game to get released ever ever ever ;) but wont be that grapically hardcore..

heres a quick extract from a review i found:

With standard rendering, the performances of the GeForce 8 surprised us even if they were announced to be limited by the CPU. On average, the GeForce 8800 GTX is 70% faster than the GeForce 7900 GTX! It is also faster than any of the previous multi-card systems.

The GeForce 8800 GTS ends up just a little bit ahead of the GeForce 7950 GX2.

The GeForce 8800 GTX in SLI can
