100w bulbs only good for 5 hours...

Featured Replies

Are we talking dipped or full beam here?

I would not put 130w bulbs in lamps with plastic lenses, you will almost certainly discolour them. I don't think the wiring would take it for very long either. If you want a large increase in light output then you really need to look at fitting extra light units as the standard ones are really not up to the job of throwing that much light out.

I'm talking about main beam .... my dipped beams are road legal 55W bulbs :D

Its curious to me as I used to run 100W bulbs a lot years ago.

The really curious thing is I ran different bulbs in Cibie Super Oscars. 100w nearside and 55w offside. The 55w then gave slightly less glare immediately ahead, the 100w a noticeably stronger beam. Ran this set up for years on a couple of cars and never noiticed any deterioration in the 100w bulbs vs the 55s?

Well having posted that the Halfrauds rally bulbs were going OK after 12 months, the O/S one decided it would go dim on me a couple of days ago. Probably an oxygen ingress or trapped in when the bulb was made, but the difference was noticable from the drivers seat. The filament is still intact, however, the envelope now has a nice graduated tint. Output was significantly less than a 55 watter. However, this can happen to 55w bulbs as well.

That's interesting, Chris as I was checking my bulbs at the weekend after seeing your post. Fortunately, my 18 month old Philips Rallye 100W bulbs are still nice and clear :D

Strangely, only one of the Halfrauds ones has gone this way, the other is still fine. Probably a manufacturing defect but I have had over 12 months use from it, so not unacceptable.

Info

I used 100w bulbs.... they cooked the reflector and caused the headlamp units to leak due to excessive heat/expansion.

Be careful.

Which 100W bulbs were you running and how long were you running them for at a time?

And what were you running them in?

8 hrs to Southern Alps [Geneva] and back.. No traffic.main beam on the autoroutes most of the way

Fabia combi Elegance [Tdi]

I had this problem with my previous Peugeot 406. I changed the bulbs for more powerful versions and they caused them to expand and leak. I put the old bulbs back in and got the headlamps changed under warranty. I'm not going to try more powerful bulbs in the VRS in case this happens again (I also don't want to overload the wiring)

very wise.

from my experience additional driving lamps are always the best option but external types tend to spoil the front lines on some vehicles. The integral type [Golf/Polo] are good but I've never seen them for the Fabia...but then again the lights are not so poor therefore never researched it. 100w wasn't a vast improvement over standard and wished I had saved my money for something useful!

I wouldn't put such a powerfull bulb in as the 100-130w can distaurt the plastic h/lamp lenses over time which will cost a hell of alot more than £20

I've had phillips VisionPlus for 3 years (and they have been voted by many mags the best on the market for more than 3 consecitive years) with same light emiting through out and compared to halfrauds own 100w There brighter and whiter.
