Whining VRS Transmission- Dealer Woes

Featured Replies

Hi Guys!

This is my first post- I have been registered since purchasing my 04 Fabia VRS back in August but just as a 'browser'!

Not long after purchasing my furby from a local dealership I noticed a whine in the transmission particulary in 3rd gear and also noticeable in 2nd. The whine is only apparent on the over-run or when I am just travelling at slow speeds on minor roads and not under acceleration. In 3rd gear the whine takes on a resonating drone which goes right through me and it is driving me mad

I paid a visit to my dealership back in Septmember and a technician drove the car and agreed that there was transmission noise but asked whether I could basically leave it for a short while so that it could get worse and make it easier to diagnose. I reluctantly agreed on the basis that they made a note on their system ready for when I returned.

Well, the car was returned today to be looked at again and to have the rear door seals fixed and they have just called to inform me that they can not find anything wrong with the transmission:( I mentioned my visit back in September but they have no record of this and they said that they will get a technician to take another look in the morning.

This has got me wondering now about whether the transmission is perfectly ok and whether the noise is perfectly normal? Has anyone else come across this problem or is the 6 speed box fitted not the quietest?

Can I have some advice please or is there anyone who lives locally to Redditch and drives a Fabia VRS that could come take a listen!

Apologies about the long post! phew!

Rob.

PS- The dealer diagnosed the leaky rear doors as window regulators  Does this sound right?- The water sits in the bottom of the seals and drips down.

this is caused by the drain holes in teh bottom of the door getting blocked upo with crud....

Water leak is a common problem if you do a search. I have not noticed any undue transmission whine on my furb vRS 06 plate or recall any on the last one 53 plate, sorry i can't be more helpfull but welcome to Brisky  and i'm sure someone closer to home will be along soon.

Out of curiosity what is the mileage of the car?

Has the service schedule been adhered to? Gearbox oil topped up?

Thanks for the feedback. It is an o4 plate with 30k miles. It has been correctly serviced at the specified intervals but I am not sure about gearbox oil- should the dealer not check?

i dont think checking the gearbox oil is part of the service schedule .

i have an 04 VRS and there is no undue noise from the gearbox , if it is as bad as you say it is , in that the resonance is going right through you , it deffo must have a fault , poss bearing failure , i would get the technician or service manager to road test it with you to confirm the fault .

if they still say there is no problem take it to another dealer and contact Skoda customer service

Thanks for the advice guys- I'll keep you posted!

Transmission whine on the overrun, yup, got that...

Haven't got a droning though. If I had that, I'd have reported it.

i had the exact same problem on my new 55 plate vrs. first they changed the wheel bearings to no avail and finally they replaced the gear box .Problem solved good luck!

At about 34mph in 3rd, I get a bit of a funny noise - not really a whine, best description I can give is if you turn a bike upside down, get the back wheel turning really fast and then stop turning the pedals, it's the noise you get before the wheel slows down enough for you to hear the tick-tick-tick of the freewheel. It's not quite constant, sort of fades in an out slightly, just like the bike wheel being ever-so-slightly unbalanced because of the inner tube valve.

Anyway, I asked the dealer about it when I first got the car (new), and he said it's just a resonance effect. It doesn't happen below 32mph or about 36, and hasn't got worse in 43k miles, so I just use it as a handy audible warning of going too fast in 30 zones!

BTW, I can only hear it if the stereo's way down, so it's not exactly a loud noise...

my gearbox was replaced at 40k because it jumped off it's mountings :( only noise it ever made was "BANG!" ...

*sharky is in a bad mood today... still waiting to hear from Skoda about warranty issues.......
