Accuracy Of Maxidot Fuel Gauge & MPG?

Featured Replies

well filled the car up the other day with its first tank of 'proper' fuel (tesco 99). however for a good 5 to 10 miles before the fill up the cars computer was reading 0 miles of fuel left. i was giving it some beans too (i wanted to flush out as much of the crap 95 as i could...) but when i came to fill up it only took 51 litres

i thought the new vrs had a 60 litre tank? is the computer really that inaccurate or is it a 50 litre tank and i was chancing my luck? does this possibly explain why fuel consumption so far has been pretty poor with an average of around 25mpg (this is with just over 600 miles on the clock and using no more than 4k revs). can this thing be calibrated or similar?

cheers

Fuel tank is 55 Litres IIRC, same as mk1.

The computer will say 0 miles when you still have a few litres remaining. The reason for that is that so you dont run out of petrol. I drove my mk1 quiet some distance on 0 miles worried it was about to cut out, but like you only managed 50-51 litres till full.

As has been said it's a 55 litre tank.

I think the most I've put in my tdi has been 53.5 and that's with the trip meter showing zero

I ran out of fuel in Mk1 vRS, I think I had about 45 miles after light came on (wasn't the most fuel efficient 45 miles :) )...I only had a few miles to go to get to petrol station :o

oh right so it was nearly empty then thats not so bad! anyone finding the new mk2 vrs drinks a lot more fuel than the last one?

I've managed to get just over 53 litres in my tank with computer reading 0.

Fuel consumption is worst than the mk1 vRS, I average 31mpg, when I used to average 35mpg with the mk1. If you keep to the speed limits and are light on the throttle, it will do 35mpg, but driving that way is not in the spirit of the car.

Worst I have managed for a tank is 19mpg, but I was pulling a caravan.

I find the mpg computer 1mpg high, i.e. displays 32, when it is actually doing 31mpg.

In the end, if fuel is a worry, you should have brought a diesel.

p.s. keep an eye on the oil level, mine has used 3 litres in the first 20000 miles.

I would expect the economy to be worse. Bigger engine, more BHP and bigger, heavier car all see to that.

newer tighter engine too
