Devonutopia (tm) full race exhaust system on!!

Featured Replies

Not satisfied with the de-cat alone, I got the rear exhaust torched off and replaced with steel pipe/chrome tip, just like Jason. No Cat, No rear box, no problem!:)

I like it, but perhaps it's not for everyone.

In-cabin noise:

deeper

Idle and low revs, almost no difference in volume.

average acceleration above 2,500rpm it gets noisier but not badly so.

Flooring it gets nicely snarly around 3,500K

steady speed almost no differenece

Response:

straight through pipe, what can I say?:D great!

Overall, I'm well-pleased. Why do they put exhausts on diesels anyway?

This further fuels my sneaking suspicion that diesel performance exhaust systems are lets say perhaps heavily reliant on marketing?

Now you just need a 2.5" downpipe and one pipe all the way to the back - nothing o.e.m left at all. ;)

I thought back pressure resulted in more torque? I have been lead to believe less back pressure is more power? Would be interested to see a rolling road graph actually.

update: I don't like it.

I FECKIN LOVE IT!!!!

The snarl on full pedal-to-the-metal is so sweet! Mp3 of 'Black Betty' on full blast with the windows down - a downright spiritual moment:D

Oh and SWMBO remarked 'it's quiet' in the cabin when I drove as usual with her in the car (restrained?).....:)

Its OK when restrained, although I've found the 6th gear 1500rpm pull quite boomy - I like that though.

Its a long standing thing, that TDIs need no back pressure whatsoever for torque. The turbos create enough on their own. The most efficient exhaust is none at all. At least I went for a full pipe to the back. Was quite tempted to fashion something that came out behind a front wheel, leaving a "fakey" tailpipe at the back....

so repeat this diesel modders mantra after me: - "diesel performance exhausts are a con, diesel performance exhausts are a con"

(awaits on-line flak from those who wish to justify a large outlay on a less free-flowing system with a good name..... )

It's not really a con ;) - mine still has a (sports) cat, and it is a fairly nice diameter pipe. Sure, not as cheap as a straight-through pipe, but I wasn't after one :D

For the best value for money though, you can't beat the straight through pipe I'd imagine ;)

I was only kidding WW, the cost of a proper custom exhaust plus shipping out to here would have endangered my life (SWMBO-related injuries)!

Deffo value for money: theoretically near-best free-flowing exhaust at a a total cost of Bahrain Dinars 15 (for decat + pipe) plus 5 for a chrome tip with resonator (that it a near-identical match for the OEM one) and 20 for removing the box, welding in pipe plus the chrome tip = BD40 which is exactly GBP 55.

Boomy in 6th at 1500? I don't get that problem Jase - maybe the advantage of having stayed with the stock 2 1/4 inch pipe using OEM supports and solidly welded?

Wasn't taking it personally ;) I'm quite happy to have the Blueflame zorst on mine, and SWMBO-danger-levels were kept in check :D

I have a feeling the welding may have made it less likely to boom in your case/car then in Jason's perhaps. Hard to say :)

That is an excellent price though

Will any of you be posting any audio to these straight though systems? I wouldn't mind knowing what they sound like.

I'll try to get on it...

Bet Jason has one already

nice to see a thread comparing all the different exhaust sounds.....

Umm, not sure I do have one - might be worth me checking my photobucket. My booming actually started after fitting the 2.5" race downpipe / manifold from Allards, so it's probably not that boomy on the standard downpipe. :)

With regards to the video, ummm, actually it was in the most recent weston super mare meet thread - couple of vid clips - one of mine - go searching. ;)
