VW Golf Mark IV TDI

Featured Replies

Did VW make a Non-GT Golf TDI with the 130BHP PD Engine?

I have been behind two Golfs with just the TDI badge which have certainly got more than the 90-105BHP I would expect from just a plain TDI.

I know they made:

90BHP TDI

100BHP TDI

130BHP TDI - GT

150BHP TDI - GTT (very rare)

No (excluding estates)

Everything above 100bhp in TDI form was a GT.

None of the mk4 GT TDIs were badged as anything other than a TDI unless they were 150 TDIs, some of which had GTI badges and some 'all red' TDI badges.

This any help?

Lots of chipped ones about though, even a 90 with a re-map is very quick when it needs to be. Very soggy handling as standard on all of 'em though!

Not forgetting the 110 bhp non PD GT TDI and the 'early' TDI PD 115 of course?!! Which was also a 'GT'

Doesnt help when PD100 owners badge theirs as GTs for looks :o

Sure the 110TDi made it out in none GT form.

Em...I know I have got only 1250miles on my VRS, and it certainly feels a lot quicker the PD100 Fabia, perhaps if there are 115BHP TDIs that is why I can only keep up and not blast passed them (yet!)

As I said in the post ALL TDIs 100 bhp AND ABOVE were badged as GTs.

I couldn't be bothered with typing out all of the engine designations but seeing as you have prompted me,

90 non PD, non GT

100 PD, non GT

110 non PD, 115PD, 130 PD, 150 PD - all GTs.

Estates and Boras had their own designations, and no I can't be bothered to type them out. :)

I thank you! :D

VW loved to badge the mkiv's anything they wanted IMO, its very hard telling what's what going by the badging on them.

I've seen a TDI115 badged as (SILVER) GTI (lad from work) It's very hard to tell!!

That's 'cos there's a million GTI badges for sale on ebay! Plus firms like Awesome and VAGparts knock 'em out all the time at discounted prices over the internet. Particularly easy on the mk4 Golf as they all looked intentical unlike all the other Golf series where the GTI was (more or less) unique looking.

VW UK love to badge their cars different to the rest of Europe though, my GT is really a Sport/Sportline spec car, as the GT was UK unique until the new 170bhp GTs were introduced with a new nose fairly recently.

There is a lad at work who has a 52 plate VW Golf GTi Tdi Mark 4 which he tells me is the 25th anniversary model. It has the 150PS Tdi PD engine and a 6spd box.

It is reflex silver and has done 140,000 miles with two owners, him being the second and it came with a full VW dealer service history.

A couple of shots of Millers and the dielectric grease mod and I am now his best friend!

Nice spec car, unusual to find one of those with that many miles :)

They had a bit better suspension set up than the other GTIs too so actually handled quite well.

So what is a Mark 5 2.0 TDI - A GT also, as it has 140bhp? Was wondering this as they're not badged up as "GT TDI" - just "2.0 TDI"

Is that the same model as the 180BHP petrol enined Golf GTI , with leather , and IIRC came in Black or Silver , and was advertised on TV with that ad that showed all the GTI's from MK1-4? I looked at one of those around the same time as I bought my Octy vRS , but couldnt justify the extra

They are listed as GT TDI in the 2006MY Brochure I have , and are also availible with 4Motion. IIRC the 4Motion model is tho only one that gets anything more than '2.0 TDI' on its butt , the 4WD versions getting a '4Motion' badge with a red '4' on it.

I've put a brief scenario in post #9 up there Jason ^^^^^^ although I didn't directly refer to it as a mk5, just ''my GT''. Basically it's a UK unique model for the older ones (Sports in Europe with same spec) and the real deal GT MK5 is the new Beetle nosed 170bhp model.

I don't think the badging is consistent. AIUI soem model badges are fitted by dealers and they went a bit mix-and-match.

Just browsing here as I have a Golf TDI 130 too.

What is the dielectric grease mod? I have never heard of it! or am i missing something?:)

Wrong I'm afraid. Later on the Golf 130PD was available in SE trim also......

If you do a search under 'dielectric grease' you will come across a number of interesting posts about this simple, yet very effective modification, tried and tested both here and abroad.

Happy searching!
