as i have one of my rear tyres off at the moment awaiting a new tyre i decided to take a look at my tyre wear and was shocked to discover that the rear tyre i have off is down to the wear band in the centre(but not on the outer edge, over inflated possibly?) so i decided to check the rest of the tyres and discovered that the other rear tyre is equally worn but the fronts are showing a hell of a lot less wear, the fronts still have about 7-8mm before the wear band :confused:

i know the camber is well out on the rear of my car but the tyres are worn equally across the tyre just worn a lot more than the fronts, could the fact that the rear is so low put the tracking out at the rear so much that it has worn the tyres twice as quickly as the fronts?

this is the sodding nail that went through, as you can see the head is still nearly level with the tread yet it sticks out the side wall about an inch :eek:

Yeah if the rear camber is out (toe in i think) then you will see a lot more wear on the inner edge of the tyre.

IIRC Renault used to do this (and may still do so) slightly to get the rear to handle a bit better, but it had the effect of increasing tyre wear. Obviously the camber was only slightly in/out of the renaults.

Lowering a car would change it a lot.

Camber is the vertical tilt on the wheel, Measured positive or negative degrees from 90o to the road surface.

Toe is the horizontal direction the wheel is pointing in, measured + or - from pointing straight ahead or parralel.

I have the same problem, rear tyres have lasted around 4k, fronts last 2-3 times that.

Em, that tyre is not down to the Tread Wear Indicator in the middle. See the raised bits in the grooves, those are the TWIs. What you have there is a knackered tyre (due to sidewall damage), with grooves that don't meet each other in the centre of the tread area. Saying which, it could still have been run over-inflated. All the gen. on my car says that rear pressures are 2PSI lower than the fronts (irrespective of size).

i know what the wear indicators are thanks and the one in the middle of the tyre is level with the tread yet the outer ones are about 1mm - 2mm under hence my uneven tyre wear in the middle rather than on one edge like i would have expected. :)

i'll try and take a better picture.

My balls up on camber and toe, was too early for my brain to be working after a complete lack of sleep.

I know somebody does some special tie bar for lowered 4x4's to get over camber issues.

Maybe a little, fronts a fairly even 5+mm across all of the tread, rears 5+mm on the centre and outer edges, 4.5+mm on the inner edges.

This may sound kind of daft, but have you got any weight in the back?

Just thinking if there is no weight over the wheels maybe they are slipping a fraction at the back and so wearing faster then expected?

Just a guess but it sounds plausable to my brain.

Not pushed them enough or done enough driving to give a proper verdict but they're certainly not harsh like many coilovers can be.

Heard too many reports of failed dampers on the KW and have only heard good reports of H&R, also they were recommended by Kev.

Is that on the V1s and V2s (i remembering something about the v3 being the only one they actually make)? Hope mine don't fail :(. One more interesting thing to check out when my ride out actually happens!

I'd advise checking the dampers for leaks before the warranty runs out so you can get replacements if needed.
