My Octy has 2000 km on it. Does anyone know when to change the oil for the first time?

Opinions differ. Some would say do an oil change now to flush away the crud left by manufacturing; others say there is no such crud, so leave it until the next service. You pays yer money and takes yer choice (FWIW I changed mine at 2000 miles).

If you change too early you may not bed your engine in however and so could end up with high oil consumption.

IMHO leave it until 10k and change it regardless of wether on variable or fixed interval.

I was going to get mine done at 10,000 miles, but was reassured it didnt need doing until 20,000..I've got an Octy 2 1.6MPI. Service light has just appeared at just over 15,500 miles. Booked in for next week. Car is a 54 plate

The oil filter should retain any particles in the oil.

Indeed, so if you want to be safe, but not too expensive, then change the oil filter assuming it drops in the top and top up clean oil.

I just passed 4500 km (2800 miles)after 3 months in my 2.0 T RS and I changed the oil and filter at my friend's garage. I supplied the filter (genuine) and he the oil (VW spec) for less than 35 quid! Book stamped as well. I am going to ignore the variable servicing and do an oil change every 10,000 km or 6000 miles. Well worth it as this car is a keeper for many years to come.
