fading paint?

Featured Replies

Im about to get a octavia VRS which my mate is selling,

its a 51 plate in yellow but the bonnet is faded along with the rear spoiler, hes going to blow them over for me before i buy as hes a car sprayer and im a mate but is this a common problem with the octy or just the yellow

i know red cars dont keep their shine that well but i was suprised about this

is it because of the heat on the bonnet? and the fact that the spoiler is plastic or is just that the previous owner just didnt look after it properly?

craig

It's because those panels have been done in solid colour in the past and not in clear over base as the factory used originally.

will that be a problem on other panels later on?

Not if they are original factory finish.;) Ask your mate to paint it in base coat and laquer and this will stop it fading. To learn more do a search for "tinoven"

I posted about this issue a while back :)

thanks for that, should be getting it before christmas

took it out today and loved it:D

Sorry it's tinnoven (double N) :o

Probably just oxidised paint, there should be no need for a respray, just some decent polish on a rotary or orbital polisher.

My Yellow Furbie's Spoiler and filler cap cover look to be a different colour. I was told by a paint shop bloke that because there plastic they cannot be heated up enough to "Cure" the paint........True or False....Who Knows...:ne_nau:

Try a good paint cleaner before polishing. In most cases this will remove the oxidation.

I use Zymol HD cleanse but it's a little expensive. I think Meguiars or P21 will do a good one for around £10

Same with my yellow Octy RS - its the spoiler ande filler cap that have faded.

Nothing to do with temperature at all, It is either that those parts are painted seperately to the car from new, (different plant for somme reason:confused: ) and they use solid colour for cost reasons.

Or it is just because they are plastic parts, and even when you have reached opacity the colour still looks off (which happens a lot). Audi did a press release on the subject a bit back because they were getting complaints about bumpers and mirrors.

Oh, just for the record my octy is yellow and as the spoiler kept fading and I was getting fed up with compounding it and waxing it, which is abrasive anyway. I laquered it in my dinner hour and hey presto no fading so far after about 12 months

God I'm boring but I do know paint :o
