Things to look out for when picking up a 2nd hand vRS?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I haven't been on here in a long time, but it's time to chop in my beloved Fabia 1.9TDi. It's done nearly 80k of trouble free motoring, but I need something bigger - I've put down a deposit on an 05 plate mk1 vRS estate that I'm going to see / pick up on Monday. I'm so excited it's untrue

Before accepting the car I want to give it a good check over - this is my list so far - please add to it if you can...

Make sure the climate control runs nice and cold and doesn't smell funny

Check to see if coil packs have been replaced (had they designed out the problem by 2005?)

See if the car hesitates in 3rd gear (as per the sticky at the top of the Octy forum)

Check all electrics (windows / cd changer etc)

Thanks,

BFG

The coil packs I am sure were sorted by 2005 but it is always worth double checking! I think you will be lucky to detect any hesitation in 3rd gear in a test drive; they seem very intermittent in my experience. CD changers are sometimes dodgy so it’s worth taking 6 disks with you and selecting each one from the changer just to be sure it is working.

Spare tyre - is it there?

Indicators can malfunction so I would give those a quick check.

Check central locking/deadlocks

I am racking my brain to think of things to look out for and I just can't! They really don't seem to suffer from any one major fault that I can think of, just the usual second hand car stuff!

Try the brakes in reverse - if they make a nasty 'mooo'ing' noise you may be able to get the counterbalance weights (which solve the problem but cost c£65) thrown in.

Good luck with your car, I am sure it will serve you well.

Check for damage to the front spoiler. It's easy to knock it on kerbs, speedbumps etc.

Have a diagnostic scan (VAG-COM) carried out if you can to check if any faults are logged.
