Front brake problems...

Featured Replies

My vRS has something wrong with the front brakes (I think). At speeds of anything up to 50mph there is a quiet squeak from the front left. It sounders like there is a budgie stuck in my wheel arch (tweet...tweet...tweet... etc). The noise tents to be worse when turning left or right . I stripped both sides down, cleaned, lubricated and refitted. The discs and pads have loads of life left in them. The problem seemed to go for a few days and then returned. I left it a few weeks and then had them stripped down again by an AA autocentre in York. They said they couldn't find a fault but everything seemed a bit tight so they basically did the same as I had done again. Again the problem went but this time only for about 15 miles and has now returned and is worse than ever. Has anyone come across this? The noise vanishes when I touch the brake pedal very lightly. I'm wondering if the caliper needs stripping down :(. Failing that I may try replacing the pads :(.

is there a lip on the disc ? , as the caliper piston retracts it lets the pads have that little bit of free play , the edge of the pad could just be coming into contact with the lip on the edge of the disc causing the squeak , nothing to worry about but can be annoying , i had a similar problem on the my Fabia VRS , i tapped all the rusty lip off the edge of the disc with a hammer and this has cured the squeak

There is a very slight lip now but there wasn't when the problem first started.. The edge of the disks are clean as they have been painted green to match the calipers. Your explanation sounds viable. Why is the noise worse when turning? That suggests to me that something is loose :(

could be worse when turning due to slight play in wheel bearings and extra loading on the wheels causing the disc to rub on the pads

do you copper slip the pad edges on the caliper slide ? this maybe beneficial to do as it could stop the pads from moving about too much when the making the squeak

I did put copper slip on the contact edges of the pad and on the back, not sure if the AA Autocentre did though. I may take it as an opportunity to fit some grooved discs and see if that helps :D

Thanks for your input by the way. It's nice to know it doesn't sound too serious!

Although I don't have a VRs I do have access to an Octavia 4x4. I have had the symptoms you describe in every front wheel drive disc braked car after approx 70K. Usually the squeak can be elimiated by removing corrosion on the calipers at the point where the disc pads slide towards and away from the disc and applying copper ease to disc pad edges. Also useful to wind back the piston and check remedy tigthness. If untreated these symptoms can lead to overheating brake discs and premature burn out of pads. On two occasions the problem was solved by replacing brake caplipers on both front wheels
