Mystery of the missing GPS signal

Featured Replies

For some reason today I was basically unable to get signal on my SatNav (garmin) and camera spotter device (talex).

The talex could not update time or tell me my speed and the garmin could rearly pick up satilite signal.

Is it something to do with my car or devices, or is it more to do with something wrong with the satilties in the sky today.

Did anyone else have this problem?

Yes i was disconnected for ages, then the signal suddenly arrived.

mine was shocking in manchester/cheshire yesterday, too. weird!

maybe the americans are messing about with them....?

I had a weird time with my Tom Tom last night too. First it found out my location and then it suddenly 'lost' where it was before readjusting itself and found itself again.

Maybe its due to the bad weather we have been having or like someone said, the US might of been playing around with their military satellites :D

Glad it is just not me.

I cleaned my windscreen because I thought it might be so dirty the thing was not working.

Aliens using our own satallites against us:rofl: Ever seen Independence day?

Tom Tom was being weird today, saying I was driving in the middle of a field!

Hmm. I wonder what it was? No mention of faults on the major news sites.

Solar flux

Think it might be Tony, getting the pay as you drive database up to date ?

.

No problems for me with TomTom, yesterday or today. Strange though :rubchin:

Went I went out at 9pm to get some milk the talex never picked up signal.

The only thing I am doing diffrently is I have a transmitter for my iPod and I have been using it. I hardly see how this could possibly cause the GPS devices to stop working.

Doing my head in 10,000 miles driven since June when I got the car and I have always been warned of forth coming speed cameras. Makes me realise how much I rely on the thing.

Do you not find driving at the speed limit is the safer option? for license and safety?

Do you enjoy butting into other people's thread with sarky and off topic remarks? As far as I can tell this is the second in the same week that you have done so.

I was in an area of the country I did not know, the speed limits seemed to change constantly and their were cameras everywhere. Due to the fact I was hopelessly lost I very much doubt I was speeding, but it is very reasureing to have a little voice pipe in the speed limit and the distance to camera.

Back on topic, talex did not work today but garmin did.

Doing my head in!!

My Road Angel was taking forever to get a satellite fix today also! Hmmm

Despite being lost a good driver would know the speed limit sweety...

Also the ideal thing to do in this situation is to let the device "find" itself in a single location as opposed to on the move...

In other words did you not try stopping?

B0ll0cks to 'a good driver would no the speed limit.' There is no need to patronise me sunshine. A perfectly normal dual carrage way would for some reason be set to 40mph when I would have imagined it to be 60mph or more with speed cameras. Also I use the talex to give an accurate speed, I am not used to ever looking at my speedo for that information. All I was saying was it was eeary not to have the tools that I drive with everyday.

Of course I pulled over and stopped. But as I was having to drive from Essex to Devon I needed to crack on and not be f@nnying around for GPS signal that never arrived. In the past I have never had to wait for the devices to catch up with me.

Well Said!!!

Yes, if you can spot the signs in peeing down conditions, evening 3 lane traffic (i.e. sometimes the signs are blocked by vans and lorries), glaring headlights, and sections changing limits as many as four times in one mile + you're trying to remember / see the street names to turn off.

I think it's called information overload - and anything that eases this is a bonus in my opinion. Hence a Talex.

Example - a friend was done recently for 60 in a 40 zone. Goddammit, he explained, I know the damned thing is there - I was just thinking about something work-related. Basically he was driving on 'Auto' ? Most, I would think, of motorists do - such are pressures of everyday life. He's the one who demo'ed the Talex to me.

In truth, since I've bought it I've become far more cautious with speed - and yet its purpose was to let me 'enjoy' the vRS a leetle and to save my son from getting a 2nd ticket within 2 years (new driver).

Back to the thread :-

I too have done searches as to why the signals have been bad - but have seen nothing of note.

I passed a speed camera van last week doing about 110 in a 100km/h zone. I wasn't watching my speed because I was thinking about how to do up our kitchen - doh!

Hope I don't get a ticket. And if I do, the three cars ahead of me will too!

The NOAA report says it was the lowest grade sunstorm (G1) with no radio blackouts:-

It also says we're now at the trough of the 11 year cycle:-

Of course I pulled over and stopped. But as I was having to drive from Essex to Devon ...

As I was reading your earlier post I was thinking "that sounds like Essex".

Re the Ipod radio link, it is unlikely but possible that the device is interfering with the GPS reception. The GPS unit relies on a signal from several satellites. Any other signal being broadcast in the car may interfere with its reception. Also, the unit may put interference into the power supply.

I had problems trying to run a Road Angel GPS unit and Snooper radar detector in the same car on opposite sides of the screen. The GPS signal was corrupted by the Snooper.

Try running the GPS units without the Ipod transmitter and see if it receives OK. Just ordered a Talex myself as a repalcement for the Road Angel, whose subscriptions are uncompetitive and its database scant on mobile sites.

Re the Talex

Have had 2 queries since I got it - both emails answered very swiftly by Steve Walsh at Talex, very accurately too. He really has his finger on the button as to type of camera and its exact location.

Hi

I seem to remember reading you bought yours from talexgps, rather than the talex home site. Did you get quick delivery out of them? I placed an order and had it confirmed on the 29th Dec but have left two messages and an email today with no reply. Supposed to be next working day delivery which would / should have been today.

Chris

Got it, as promised, the next day, Chris.

Odd you've had to wait.

Ne'er mind, 'll come tomorrow (oops 00.25 hours) - today, I'm sure.
