Brake fluid change

Featured Replies

I have booked my car in for an annual service & brake fluid change in a couple of weeks.

I'm sure I have a can of Castrol brake fluid sat in my shed somewhere, but how much fluid is needed to do a change? Might as well use the stuff I have rather than pay for another lot.

brake fluid does degrade over time , Ford brake fluid now has a use by date on the bottle , so i wouldn't advise using that fluid especially if it has been opened and it may not even be the correct spec fluid

best off having fresh new fluid bled through the brakes , your driving the car afterall

Especially as the dealers will only charge you in the region of 20-30 quid for the change, hardly seems worth risking it :D

Just had a look at the can - it's unopened & has no use by date on it. It's about a year old.

1L of Castrol Response Super DOT 4 synthetic - so it's good stuff.

you could ask them at the dealers , but i would suspect that they wouldn't want to use the fluid , they probably couldn't warrantee the brakes not to have problems , as they will have used something not supplied by themselves , also they would have to flush out the original fluid in the brake system as the fluid you've got is not the same spec as what is in the system already , so they would need maybe another litre of the Castrol stuff

I supply my own engine oil every service & they don't have a problem with that.

I'll ask them anyway.

yeah i've given the dealers oil to do a service on mine , they weren't happy about it , mumbling something about wrong spec , although its correct spec oil that Ford use for the Galaxy (505.01) and they made a big fuss of making a note on the invoice about the oil being supplied by customer

Had the same comment on my last invoice.

Also said something about the brakes being non standard ;)

They dont like the idea of you paying half the price that they would charge you for the oil.

If you want to be ripped off buy your oil from a main dealer.
