Advice needed on towing a car

Featured Replies

Hi guys, (and gals),

I'm after some advice if anyone knows the answer.

I'm going to help a friend tow a car they have bought for their daughter for her first car. It's got on MOT or Tax, am I able to tow it without a trailer? I will be using a towing pole with dampers.

I've towed a car before when it's been a non runner but it's had a MOT even if it's not had any tax.

If it was only a few miles I would be to bothered but it's about 35-40miles I'm not worried about the strain on my car as I will take it easy but I just want to keep on the right side of the law.

Done some google searching but to be honest I suck at it and I've found nothing.

Any Help would be great

Cheers for that

Unless the vehicle has valid VEL (tax) MOT AND insurance if you are stopped you will earn yourself at least 6 points and a nice fine.

My advice would be to use a trailer.

Trailer definitely, especially during the day ;)

I am quite seriously considering whether I should get my Rover 100 taxed & MOTed again at the moment, mainly as it would mean my engine trouble won't cause me too much grief for the garage that way. That said, I'll only do that if it is going to end up with an engine swap/bottom end swap :)

A trailer would also be much easier to drive with than a car on tow, legalities aside, although you've got a nice towing pole with dampers which might be great (I've not used one of those, just a towing rope, in the past).

Hope the car gets through it's MOT well

Cheers for that

Hi

This has been mentioned before, but can people please intimate where they are, and say what car they have.

But in this case it might not be the same car, but please say where you are and what car you want to move.

The car doing the towing is a fabia vrs and the car being towed is a mirca circ 1991. It's a family member that cant be bothered to MOT it so I've been roped in to help move it to another family members house so they can work on it.

Manchester area

Another idea what about a towing dolly so the front wheels are up in the air? Would this is fall under the same thing as a tow rope?
