I'm thinking of getting a Mk1 VRS, it has 49K on the clock and FSH, 2 things i noticed were that the gearbox was a little stiff going into 3rd and reverse, after about 10 miles of a test drive it seemed to loosn up a little, also after the test drive there was a tapping coming from what seemed to be the drivers side of the engine, near the resovour (coolant i think), but when i turned off the engine and restarted it a minute later the taping was gone

The car was at a garage, and had been sitting idle for a while, are the about due to that or is there something bigger i should look for

the car is cheap, and is coming with a 6 month warranty

My Octy vRS is 3 yrs 4 months old,has 106K miles on the clock and is great.

Its been modified from 10K miles and is dual fuel(LPG).

after a few days spent driving a brand new colt i just couldnt believe how luxurious it felt getting back into the octy and it reminded me of how it felt when i first test drove mine,within 2 minutes i was hooked:D

as for the tapping noise although it does get annoying when you are at idle sometimes,it isnt anything to worry about and most of the time a quick blip of the throttle stops mine for a while.

how many cars are this nice to drive,are this well equipped,quickish,plenty of room inside and with a huge boot,economical and not even too bad on insurance.in fact the only other car that i would have rather had over the octy at the time i bought mine was a saab 9-5 aero but unfortunately it wouldnt hold my minimoto whereas the octy just swallows it up as well as all my gear.

go on get one,you know it makes sense.

This worries me a bit. When on a test drive always start the car from cold.

i meant that the car has been at the garage for 4-5 months i did start it from cold and it turned over first time perfectly, and drove brillant

just need to make the decision, as the wife like the other car we're looking at

I collected my 03 plate vrs from the dealers yesterday and love it. It also came with a full 1 year Skoda warranty so most problems will be covered.

I have had my octi for 2 years adn do not regret it. with my job I get access to most of the company fleet of cars and I have over the years driven BMW's Merc's audis ford vauxhall fiat vw's and many others and I must say that even after driving some mercs and bmw's which cost more than twice the cost of mine when new that I still get back in mine and say yes I am glad I bought this! beucase it does both jobs of being a hot estate and gt car perfectly. and the key thing is the service form some of the dealer puts the premum dealers to shame.

My gearbox is a little stiff into second/reverse when cold. I don't think it's anything to worry about but have heard people say that replacing the oil with fully synth' can resolve it.

Have you driven other cars to get an idea of how a "good" one should feel? Certainly worth doing before signing on the dotted line but I am as guilty as anyone for getting carried away and not doing so.
