Hi about my skoda (new to group)

Featured Replies

Hi Im a new member of the BriSkoda community but Ive owned my 02 Fabia from new, 12k ish miles a Fabia MPI Classic 1.4 in lary yellow paintscheme.

Turned on to skodas by my father who has been part of the car community (now retired) and working with them and probably screaming their praises well before the VAG image came to boot.

Anyway looking for your assistance. I got my car booked in for service but I may be able to avoid it. Its the rear wipe, it no longer jets water and I have a slow but sure leak from the frontage. I am sure it is due to the thaw and Im sure I was slack with summer winter mix. I lose the whole of the bottle after a fairly short time as its dripping.

Is it worth having a look to see if I can hook it back up myself as Skoda did this for me before and only took them 2 secs just I have no clue where to look? Otherwise I have to wait a week or 2 for it to be booked in.

Also, has anyone noticed on theirs a bit of reluctance, similar to injectors getting blocked on cold starts? May be normal but I never noticed it on an injected Rover SLI I had. (Nice but high maintenance)

Id also be interested to know if anyone gets steering "clunk" when doing lock when at parking/setting off speeds?

Ive got a Sony ICE with the wondeful remote commander installed (need a blank plate to finish, but only a strip of plastic :) I think i have permanent power incorrectly wired as it ejects my cd and wipes channels memory on power off (nuisance).

Got a really cheap mobile phone solution too, a cig lighter speaker and the nokia holder pushed into teh slot of HU, cheap solution at

Back up to the top for you.

I know all these have been answered before it's just that, not owning a Fabia myself, the answers went in one eye and out the other :D

I'm sure someone with a Fabia will help you out when they actually get out of bed (the lazy slackers :P ).

Anyway, welcome to the site! :D

Wel some of us have just got home from work jon. :thumbdwn: :D

Welcome to Briskoda  hope this helps

If you check behind the engine bay, near the ECU, there are some flexible plastic tubes that pop off in very cold weather. This can easily be put back on and will solve the rear washer jet and most probably the water leak. To find it, use the rear washers and then feel around the back of the engine bay for a damp patch and a open ended tube, or get someone to operate the washers while you look, you only need to do this the once as you will know where it is next time.

With the injectors, that is normal as there is gunk in the petrol. To sort this out every few thousand miles use Redex or STP injector fuel treatment.

Not sure about the steering problem, get it checked under warrenty.

Behind the Sony HU there are the wires (obviously) and there will be two power cables, one red, one yellow with connectors so that you can change the power set up. Look at the connection instructions with the HU to see how they should be set up (you have permanent live and switchable ignition).

this should solve most of the problems you have posted.

Fish the stereo out and you will see a red and yellow power wire with bullet connectors on them. Unplug them and swap them over so red goes to yellow and vice versa. Job done.

the 'clunk' noise you describe sound like a similar problem to my old 1.4 8v when i knackered the front wheel bearings in Wales on a 'touring' day :D

(Jon i have just got home from work as well :D )

Hey what a nice introduction to the group :) Thanks all for your help.

I thought I might be able to have a crack at it then (shame about the dark nights though, could do with being lighter after work to have a crack at some of the stuff). Im no so bothered about the small strip than runs above the stereo but losing all the power is a pain in the a**.

Oh, the "clunky" thing....hard to explain but its not so much a clunk as a very light knock that only occurs once on turning lock (and usually from the left to right). It usually is acommpanied by a dimming of the lights. I didnt think it was anything so extreme as a bearing, hard to even call it a "fault" and the car is otherwise fine no noticeable issue. (Maybe power steering coming to life?).

Dealer cant explain it so far neway.

Bit upset I decided upon an 8v...I could use the extra performance of a 16v and wouldnt mind something like a fast hatch version, but I think I will save my money and get the most out of my investment in my car. Definitely the fastest small car Ive had in this engine size though(beats the pants off a 8v fiesta 1.2 I had and a million zillion times more cool). Not really big on VWs though think the golf is overrated and bloated (fatboy of the hatch market).

By the way besides appreciating my gr8 Fabia, I seem to be spending a lot of time on Enemy Territory, and profess to being a bit of a computer nerd. (overcloking an unclokable motherboard, fidlling with anything techie until wee hours of morning etc).

If I'm not doing that I'm getting nagged at to do more Diy so you figure which I prefer.

Tone

I have a Fabia with the same engine. I also get a dull clunk, if that's not a contradiction in terms. It only happens when reaching about 6-7 mph immediately after starting the engine.

It doesn't happen in other situations, eg when moving off at lights. I don't know whether it's steering-related because I can't think of many situations where I'd move off without needing to turn the wheel. Maybe I should experiment in a deserted car park.

Does this sound similar to yours or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I haven't got round to getting it looked at because the car is fine in other respects.

Ah if it's accompanied by the lights dimming, that is normal. As the power steering is Electohydraulic, when you turn the steering wheel the lights dim as it uses power, the clunk is probably just the electric motor kicking in or the alternator producing more power to compensate.

Welliesorter, that is just some of the self test systems on the car, nothing to worry about, although i was told it was ABS (which the 8v does not have iirc)

Thanks for that. The early Fabias may not all have had ABS as standard but as far as I know they all do now. Mine certainly has. I won't worry about it then.

Hi guys. Thanks for all that. So its normal which I hoped was the case glad im not the only one. No imminent fault waiting to fail outside of warranty (well if it is we can mush together to get them to do a recall cant we!)

Oh and I found a finishing HU facia, I think this is the cheapest I can find as this one included delivery unlike the incardiscount site. Then all I have to do is get jiggy with the wiring so the HU always has constant power! (I am sure I tried switching the interchangable yellow and red wires on my wiring kit b4 though, I may just call in the advice of experts!).

Still too dark for me to do with water bottle but Ive been cycling most days to work so np there, no urgent need to do yet. Keen to know where it is tho as my dealer isnt that close and it happens far to frequently.

Also I wonder if anyone has had problem with rear brakes binding due to lack of use, with the car been sitting on the drive throughout the snowy stuff, I think it may have tarnished em a bit (I hate it cos u releash the handbrake and the car doesnt drops its big bottom down until you dont quite expect it like when it starts to roll - like when my girfriend sits down on you when you aint expecting it - a shock). Please god dont let her be reading this.

I gave her a good run anyway last weekend to settle it in but I dont think its a good idea to leave too long unattended - the car that is, err I think.

Cheers
