How Fast is your....Broadband connetion

Featured Replies

My 8Mb connection at home, that was previously running at 1Mb has recently been sorted out and I now get 4Mb download speed.

I guess most ISP's boast about speed, but does anyone actuall get 8Mb?

10mb on cable here and I do get the full 10mb

I'm on 8mb max now... and get about 2... previously i was on 3mb.. and got 3mb

But I'm paying less so I don't really care :D

10Mb

Can you see the differance?

When I went from 1Mb to 4Mb, it was a little bit faster, but not 4 times.

our router says we're connected at 3,648Kbps, currently seeing more like 130Kbps...**** you BT :finger:

Back in 2Mbps days could only get 1Mbps because of distance from exchange.

Now on max, can get 5Mbps at the test socket, but only 2Mbps with the extension wiring plugged in. Must replace wiring, must replace wiring... :(

On my 8Mb link, I see 4-4.5k connection speeds on the router, but the router is on the end of an extension wire (must get rount to moving the router next to the master socket!).

All pales into insignificance compared to the work's network though

Chris

10 mb here, download speeds around 1098kb second so running at max bandwidth.

On general web browsing it doesn't seem much difference to a 1 or 2mb line , but for downloading TV shows and the like it flies

On 2MB with BT and getting near enough that. Plenty fast enough for my amateur browsing needs...

Cant fault BT tbh, except the price seems a bit steep...

You would never get anything near 4mb download speed anyway, i have a 4mb cable, and i get download speeds of about 400kbps, really depends where you download from!

I have 2 x 10MBit through a dual WAN port router :)

10meg for me.

Don't forget that line speeds are quoted in Mega/KiloBITS , and the download speeds that windows reports are in Mega/KiloBYTES - a factor of 8 difference.

400kBYTES/sec is close to the maximum speed of a 4mBIT connection

You have told me about this in the past, in relation to wireless, but I'm a bit thick.

However, I think it is slowly seeping in.

I guess the speed depends on where you live, my sleepy backwater only got Broadband 12 months ago!

i know. i'm seeing transfer rates of about 12-15kbps :thumbdwn:

1mb with Orange (Wanado?) *FREE* broadband. Speeds of about 130kbps for downloading por.. er, movies. Fine for browsing and so far not had any problems with Xbox-Live.

Does anyone think it would be worth swapping my current old 15m extension lead (I only use 3m of it, rest if coiled) for a shorter, newer one?

I have an 8Mbit from Plus.net... router sync at 8192, max download speed 800KB :-) - I live less than 1km from the exchange. Just waiting to see if ADSL 2+ hits Spennymoor soon.

I'm sure someone on here will tell me it's just a con, but I'm sure I have seen ADSL extension leads.

Is the wiring different?

Black & Decker are one of my customers, so I'm up your end (oh er missus) 2 or 3 times a month. Plus a new customer up near Consett.

Keep a look out for the stickers.

Anyway....Broadband....

at home i've got a measely 512k

at work i seen downloads of upto 500Mb but it depends on the amount of other nnetwork traffic, according to the IT bods on the third floor we've got optical fibres or something and the only bottle neck in the whole system is the speed of the hubs/switches whatever they are??

Just ordered 24meg

I'm miles away from the exchange though so i'll probably get 10meg-ish

There are things you can do to speed it up

I need to unplug the ring wire from the socket, that should reduce noise on the line and increase speed a little, i'm also going to get a new nte5 front plate and remove the need for splitters, that should help as well.

Apparently your first ten days connected with a new provider count the most, they take an average of your maximum connection speed during those ten days and then thats it, as high as youll ever go unless you get them to reset your profile.

I guess that's what happened to me.

When I signed up for 8Mb, I got 1Mb.

So a few months later I complained and they said they would reconfigure my line???? or something.

Anyway, now at 4Mb

by the ring wire do you mean teh orange and white connected at (i think) connection 3?? i tried this last night and once disconnected our phones stopped ringing on incoming calls but worked perfectly for out going calls :(

yes the orange wire on 3

heres a link to where i obtained the data, you may need the new faceplate to go with this but they are less than a 10er if you shop around

Phil's corner: August 2005

this is useful as well

::. Kitz - Low SNR Margin & problems .::

but dont forget the difference may have zero effect unless they reset your profile or you install with a new provider.
