I do it regularly (live at the end of it!). It can be a nice road, especially when the sun is out. You need to be careful of speed cameras, they tend to be on the long straight down hill before you get to the resevour when travelling away from Guisborough.

Sadly the A171 has claimed alot of lives and you really do need to be careful as their are lots of small A roads which join it in awkward places (hill tops and bends). I personally prefer the section between whitby and scarborough (also the A171) but still fairly dangerous if you're not careful!

Yeah it's a good road. I too live near it.

Favourite of mine is to turn off that road past Lockwood Beck, through Castleton & then onto Blakey Ridge. The Red Lion Inn do some nice meals over there!!

I used to do this road every weekend as far as possible after I passed my driving test in a mini clubman 1100 over 25 years ago now. No speed cameras to spoil the fun, and I agree with Jon on the Lockwood Beck turn. Some of the roads past Castleton on the way into Rosedale Abbey were also a bit of a scream, but my favourite was always the B road from Stokesley down to Helmsley, especially once you are past Chop Gate heading south

That's a good, fast flowing road! A bikers favourite too.

Is the Red Lion far from Guisbrough? I might go after college some time for the food & the drive

No not really. It's a 20 min drive & in the middle of no-where.

Oh :(

The lion is well worth the drive, the food is great and you get plenty of it. We used to go from college when we had lunch and a free period next to each other :D

I must admit I prefer the Helmsley road, especially when it’s quiet so you're not constantly getting stuck behind people. If you're feeling adventurous you can continue through Helmsley on the B1257 and then onto the B1363 to York, that’s a good road too. Or you can stay on the 1257 and take a right before you get to Malton down a road which is signed for Castle Howard. That road takes you through old castle walls, past a big lake etc... We should meet up and have a drive about in the moors round here, we're lucky to have so many good/scenic roads!

I was on nights last night so I didn't get up untill about 2pm.... Don't worry. I have pleanty of cards to go around :D

I like doing the loop to Helmsley across to Pickering then over to Whitby (past the Hole of Horcum and Flyingdales) then back to Guisborough either on the bike or the car :D

Used to do it every week - living in Scarborough - relatives in North East (where I eventually moved). Particularly liked the dual stretch before Charltons (IIRC Rosberry Topping - may be wrong (please correct me if I am)

Mind this was in the late 1980's - haven't done it in the last 9 years.

As for the nearby Helmsely - Stokesley B1257 there was a problem with bikers just taking it a bit too fast. Was attending a school reunion 11 years ago when a guy on an elderly Suzuki 250 (looked like a born again biker) forced me off the road up a verge. Nice Road but shame about some of the muppets on it.

The dual section I think you are thinking of is Birk Brow.

Think you summed the 1257 up nicely with "nice road, shame about the muppets!"

I've driven from york to whitby going past flydales and that big hole place lol

my sister in law live's in york and last time we visited my bro in law suggested a day out in whitby

needless to say i scared the 5hit out of them and myself on that road

but yes it an awesome road !!!!

from memory it is called something else but you see rosberry topping on the right about 5miles before. love that dual stretch though going up the hill but some highway planner as usual has got rid of the dual bit at the bottom corner (going up) but as soon as your past that chevron bit you can fly bye.

:)

It is Birk Brow, as vRSPhil mentioned before.

My home town Is Robin Hood's Bay. I have driven the road countless times, but it is not my favourite, too slow iwth tourists most of the time, and the fact Birkbrow is now only a 50mph. I still like the A169 Pickering to Whitby road, when quiet. My main hobby is driving, so I spent every minuit and spare penny I had driving more of the back roads, not fast but more fun.

I love Robin Hoods Bay, been back recently.....?

I used to look forward to working 'earlys' when I worked in Whitby years ago. Summers morning .....5a.m....sunrise over Freeborough Hill...90 round the left- hander near the Egton Bridge turn....mmmmmmm.

Sunday afternoons, though.....caravans...tractors...walking pace....
