Fabia Estate Detatchable Towbar

Featured Replies

Just got the bar and single electrics and bumper hole cover from Skoda but instructions say you need to order a cutter to cut hole in the bumper.

1. Anyone have the tool to loan or sell ?

2. Are there any markings on the rear of the bumper that guide you if you wanted to try and cut the hole without using he correct tool?

Appreciate some advice if possible prior to removing bumper thanks.

What make of towbar is it ?

Some makes have a dedicated fittng page. I found mine by going through the towequipe website and it had links for the manufacturers.

Westfalia have the cutting instructions for a Fabia hatch, havn't been on the brink one though.

Sounds like you're going to need a "holesaw".

You should be able to work out what diameter you'll need from the hole cover (if the diameter isn't already given in the instructions) and then try entering "holesaw" in the search on ebay, they're relatively cheap to buy.

I've not actually fitted a towbar to SWMBO's Fabia Estate but I have fitted a Westalfia (I believe Westalfia are OEM for VAG vehicles.) detachable towbar to my Golf which involved only minimal cutting to the bottom of the rear valance.

To be honest, you'd never know the Golf was fitted with a towbar when it's detached, nothing at all is visible when the swan neck is removed and the electrics are swung up behind the valance.

Anyway good luck ! :)

Its all Original Skoda bar and electrics, and the hole is not circular its oblong 8cm x 21cm.

The cutter in question is a 3 piece plate. you drill 4 holes in the correct place on the bumper, then bolt the plate either side of the bumper. When you tighten the bolts it cuts the oblong hole in the bumper the same size as the plate cutter.

Ah ! I see what you mean now, I think THIS old post shows what you need to cut ?

Maybe if VrStu sees this thread he'll be able to advise you how his dad managed to do this ?

Edited to add: Just seen another post HERE that explains that his dad's towbar slot was done at the dealers.:(

Thanks for your help.

The cutter was being sold on eBay before xmas and I had it watch list until last week when I had a clear up. Can't find it now but it didn't sell.

Almost bought it myself as a just in case - lol

Anyway as posted above Dad took it to the dealers in the end.

Thanks again, I have emailed the seller so hopefully its the correct one and still wants to sell.

It is the correct one alright.

He still has the part however it is XEA 400 001 for the Hatchback and not XEA 420 001 which is the correct one for the estate.

He is open to offers if anyone is still interested.

Just an udate. managed to borrow the correct tool from a friendly local dealer. When the bumper is removed there is a very fine guide line around the area of the bumper to be removed which is used to position the cutting template. You could use this to carefully cut out and trim the requied shape without having to buy or borrow the tool.

Our towbar fitter just used a Stanley knife to cut the bumper.
