Air con - help please ...

Featured Replies

New to Skoda ownership and on the whole liking it. Have a Jan 02 4x4 1.8t estate and have an issues with condensation.

I've cleared lots of leaves from where the pollen filter is, changed the very dirty filter and now want to test the air con's coolant to see if it has enough pressure - the air con itself is very slow to demist the windows and quite pathetic.

I've bought a gauge from Halfords and need some help where to stick it (so to speak).

It says to connect it to the LOW-SIDE PORT but I can't find any reference to this from Skoda and my local dealer had no idea where to look! Anyone know where this is, anyone topped up their air con before, did it work or do I need professional assistance?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi JMK

First of all I assume by "coolant" you mean Gas ! if so the best wat to check is put the system on cold(or v cold) and see if there is a cold flow of air out of the airvents, then turn off the aircon and see if it gets warmer, if it does then I guess the air con is working.

As for testing with a guage as you put it I would suggest you have it tested Professionally as it is ilegal to vent the gas to air(Cfc's etc)

But to get to the point of Condensation, I don't think that has any thing to do with the air con ! You say you have cleaned out a couple of filters, and that has not cured the air-flow? then try without the filters and then check the blower motor to see if it is running on all the speeds(ie full speed)

Hope that is of some help

Having the air conditioning running dries the air, which helps reducde condensation. If I get into the car with a wet jacket and the air conditioner off ("ECON") the windows quickly mist up, but when I change it to "AUTO" (air con working) they quickly clear.

My aircon on my Octavia earlier on this year didn't seem to be working properly, I kept putting it on but it didn't seem to be getting cold. Eventually, after a few weeks, it started working properly and blowing cold air into the car.

I'd be inclined to drive with the aircon on for a few weeks, using the heater dial to maintain a comfortable temperature and see how it goes before I started messing with the system, it might just need use.

I suspect as well, if you were to phone around a few air con specialist, you might get a really good price on a flush and re-gas if the problem persists.

Thanks for the repies. Will see how it gets on over the next few weeks.

If car is in garage or you have warranty, get them to check the clutch on the air con compressor. It may have a habbit of just dropping off after a while ;)

Is there any record of the aircon ever having been serviced? If not, it is way overdue being flushed and regassed - and perhaps having an antibacterial clean as well.
