Is a strut brace worthwhile?

Featured Replies

No offence meant, or taken I hope;)??

If I was the type to take offence, no doubt I would have killed myself a long time ago.

Not to Hijack thread - get a seat sport strut brace if you want the every man and his dog mod. Finish off the engine bay nicely and another bit of metal to polish. Handling benefits are negliagable if on it's own (although I don't claim to be an expert)

Never EVER try and tow using one, as they bend like a drinking straw and people will laugh at you.

Sorry:O :o !!

Was a bit of a low shot, but I guessed from your ability to laugh at yourself that you would take it in the way it was intended!?!?!?!

I don't think it'll do much harm to fit one but it would be a long way down my priority list.

Have a search or a look at the front suspension bushes, especially the front wishbone rear bush. Then do a search for the SEAT Cupra ones... There's a bit of a difference, huh? Problem is it's labour intensive to change them. So ideally, you need an independent good-guy who's got the right tools.

I think my priority list would be...

1. Eibachs and shocks (or coilovers if that floats your boat).

2. Jabba rear ARB.

3. Front wishbone rear bushes replaced with SEAT Cupra ones.

4. Maybe then do the front wishbone front bushes with powerflex bits.

5. Consider braces. Though IMO a bottom brace or ladder is likely to be more worthwhile than a strut-top brace.

I've currently ticked off items 1 and 2 on my list, considering 3. As my car's used on the road only, I might stop at that point.

Sorry to be a bit off here but why on earth would you replace brand new/nearly new parts this is a total waste of money a total waste of resources.

If you wanted a fast car buy a fast car in the first place - trying to make the car you have faster/better will always cost significantly more than buying a better car in the first place. In addition to this the vast majority of 2nd hand car buyers will steer well clear of any modified car and really you will not get any extra for these parts in fact the car may well be worth less.

Save your cash pay off your debts and then clear your mortgage once you have done that do as you wish but until then you are compromising your future/forcing yourself to have to work for longer & spend less time with your kids.

Buy a nice BMW M5 3.5 or 3.8 for

Hi Welshy,

Erm... feature creep and knowledge and more feature creep, I'm afraid. Bit of a peer group afterglow, maybe too.

I bought the car to replace my run-about, second car. Then I discovered I didn't like the balance of the car on the standard springs/dampers. I feel far more confident in its responses now. For the rest, I refer you to paragraph 1 :)

Just looking for a bit of advice really. Has anybody else had difficulties fitting the strut brace? I picked up mine from my local Seat dealer today and attempted to fit in and lets just say it didn't go to plan. As you can see from the pics, the bar is not an exact fit and as such no matter what way I try it, one of the screws insists on going on to the wrong thread. Is there anyway of helping it into place. I tried jacking up the car hoping the suspension might shift those few millimetres but to no avail.

Mine looked and fitted perfect when i fitted it. Take the bar back and compare with one they have in and swap.

I can safely say that front and rear strut braces make a very noticeable difference (on my setup with hard coilovers).

I have taken them off in the past and have noticed definate flex while driving over undulating b-roads.

The car feels stiffer and responds faster to steering input.

Oh, and Welshy... Why is it any of your business what people do with thier cars? It's a hobby for a lot of us.

get yourself a round file and file away the bit on the strut brace which is stopping the bolt from screwing in:)
