bought a PS3

Feck me it's heavy, but looks very nice. Of course it's the Jap version, and so the only potential problem I can see is the NTSC, but I have the component cable and will be connecting up via HDMI so that should be fine.

Only other thing, I spoke to someone who said it has a proper auto-sensing switched mode power supply, but the instructions (or what I can make out with my very limited katakana :o) mention 100V only. So maybe a trip to the leccy shop will be required

Still, an absolute bargain, bought Ridge Racer 7 and Sonic (for swmbo) and a second wireless controller for that 2 player split screen fun for half the UK official launch price (and a hell of a lot cheaper than the current imports you can buy in the UK).

I guess if I don't get on with it, I can always stick it on ebay and probably more than get my cash back. But anyway, about to power it up now.

Anyone else got one?

I saw a few of them running yesterday and it looked very impressive.

The off road racing game with quad bikes (whatever it's called) looked soooo good.

Got room in the suitcase for another one? ;)

I was thinking about that (the capitalist in me was saying let it go to the highest bidder  ) but if I come back from Japan with two suitcases, it starts looking a bit suspicious ;)

You lucky thing you!! not only a trip to Japan but a PS3 to boot!! :)

Isn't it enough that you rocked Japan so much during your trip that you raised a Tsunami warning?

Oh the envy,

Cheers mate

(BTW make sure you source a supply for your games there, somewhere they'll ship to the UK for you - may come in handy you never know.....)

I had a go on a wii before and made a fool of myself! lol! now we have another contender for everyones attention lol. Is it fun? I'm rubbish at most computer games, but I was pretty good at boxing on wii LOL!

Loz

the '360 is far superior.. :D

No PS3 game has anything on Gears of War.

But we still only have launch titles to look at on the PS3.

Look how much the 360's games have improved in 12 months and imagine what the ps3 will be like in a year's time (when there are eventually ones for sale here)

gears of war is pretty cool. I so owned you at that!

There is no zoning for games on the PS3, any games bought in Japan, the US or Europe will work on any console bought any where in the world :)

The only region that applies to the PS3 is the BD region for movies - Japan has now jumped ship and is Region A (same as the US, Canada and Chine). Europe is region B. I'm not too bothered about that because there's a better selection of movies on BD from the states, the DVD part of it is region 2 (like Europe).

There are only two downers I can think of - the composite output is NTSC, but that doesn't bother me as I'll be using component and HDMI. The other is that it will be locked to Japanese PS2 games, but I don't even have a PS2 and if I wanted one, they're cheap anyway :)

I did eventually unbox it and have a look at it. The biggest advantage of it from what I can see so far is how flexible the hardware is - you can install Linux on it, change hard drives without invalidating warranty, etc. Also, and this is a BIG thing for me, it's near silent and not a jet engine that is the xbox 360.

Had a quick play at Ridge Racer 7 and it's silky smooth, although I'll admit it looks carp at 480i - you can't even read some of the text on the screen it's so bad

Can't wait to get home and plug it into my 1080P projector :D

After doing some research over the last few days, it turns out you can register multiple master accounts, which are required to access playstation store where you can buy / download various bits and piece.

So, last night, I spent an hour coming up with a valid US address, registering the console :) Then went on to download various bits such as the GT HD and F1 playable demoes. Each comes out at around 650MB, so on my hotel room connection, they took best part of 10 minutes each. :D Damn I love this country :D

Was almost tempted by a Wii at $249 here in the US, but managed to resist - largely because I brought far too much stuff out with me and don't have much room in my case.

Will be travelling light (on the way out at least) next time.

Yup. Tonight, my mission should I chose to accept it is to determine how to cunningly pack my suitcase with all the necessary bits inside.

Will be fun indeed :(

Mental note: next time, travel out lightly

You soooo didnt..

Will the PS3 help loose weight, in the same way that the Wii can ?

All the exercise jumping around with the controllers ????

I don't know. I gather the new sixaxis controller for the PS3 has some kind of motion sensors inside, but from what I can tell, the games out there either do not exploit it at its best, or it's just not as well designed / can't perform as well as the Wii.

I haven't tried using it yet.

I think the six-axis was a late addition so that they weren't outdone by the Wii.

A lot of the launch titles were already quite far along so the motion sensing aspect was either not used or only shove in as a token effort.

In another 6-12 months there should be some good games using it.

I think I've decided to backtrack on my original predictions about never buying a PS3. GT HD and F1 are appealing to me in a big way so I will be buying one when it is released in the UK. I did consider importing but I think at this late stage I'd be better waiting. There is also talk that the online games will soon sense which country your PS3 was manufactured for and only allow you access to these gaming servers.

It looks like that was just Insomnia who did this to MotoStorm. And this is not something imposed by Sony, but rather a cut back due to running out of time. This has lead to hopes that the US and European versions will feature online gaming across servers.

At the present time, if you play RR7, you can see both Japanese players and US players joining the same game, so it's not something imposed by the "system".

Of course, I guess the PS3 and OS would support locking it down to regions, but I doubt they will do it as it will completely wipe out the big boost obtained when Sony disclosed that it would NOT be zoning games for the PS3 (unlike the PS2 and PS1).

I hoping and believe it will get much better over time as more games come out, there's more customer feedback and Sony get the chance to improve on the firmware. The potential of the PS3 is immense, and that has unfortunately come at the cost of the console to the end user. Whether they take advantage of this remains to be seen.

Is the online play going to be free , or chargeable like x-box live.

Strange as it sounds , this could be the deciding factor for me when I'm considering buying one

I think Sony have always suggested it will be free but I suppose that may well change at any time.

It really would be silly to region lock online games as this is something that Microsoft have not done with the 360 so I would think Sony will try to match them.

Well, back home now :)

Connected it to the PJ and it looks very nice :) Tried online gaming too, and that worked fine. Connected and found various Japanese and US players, joined a game and there was no noticeable lag, although I did have my **** handed to me on a plate :D

System features are rather nice too - plugged the CF card from the camera into and browsed the photos fine.

Now I need to source a BD movie and see what it looks like...
