Damp rear passenger footwell

Featured Replies

Yet more leaking with my car!!

I noticed this moring when I picked up some paperwork from the rear passenger footwell that it was damp. I lifted the floor mat and squashed my hand on the carpet - the result being a very wet hand

A quick search on here suggested:

- sunroof drain pipes - both sides working

- bung near to the pollen filter.

Now the latter seemed possible as I made a hole in it a couple of months back to fit my radar detector. On pulling off the scuttle cover, I saw the bung was no longer in the hole at all. I cleaned up the area, and then used a bit of silicon based sealant on the hole. Popped the bung back in, and then a large blob over the bung - just to seal the hole where the wire runs though.

I took a few pictures (not that interesting really), but I'll post them up in a bit.

I have a towel in the car currently trying to mop up the water. Guess i'll have to wait till it next rains to see if it gets wet again!

Those who have attempted to take the cover off will notice that I have managed to get the passenger side off without remove the drivers side.... that took a bit of extra wiggling around as it is 'held down' by the drivers side section!

Why is wet in the rear of the car and not the front footwell?

In my mates supurb it was the leaves in the pollen filter. it just needed a clean out.

He parked on a slight hill and the water ran to the back.

thats a good question. Apparently the carpet in the front is twice as thick... and therefore maybe I just don't know its wet in the front. The car was parked on the level though, which again makes it a bit harder to explain. However there were some posts on here about badly routed air con pipework as well. What ever the actual cause, it seems to be quite a common issue....

The other cause of the water could be the membrane in the rear door - but I have not had a chance to look at that yet....

Pollen filter was clear, but certainly worth checking! I cleaned mine out when I had a new windscreen fitted, and again when fixing the wiper linkage (twice!) and finally when fitting my radar jobbie.

They did check the air con route before the pollen filter on my mates.

I have been using the air con a bit more recently..... rather a case catch-22 then.

Windows mist up, use aircon to clear then, resulting a wet carpet.... and repeat!

What is the deal with air con pipework then? I know nothing about that....

It's the drain pipe which can be out of position where it passes through the bulk head. If you look at the bulk head from the engine bay on the passenger side it's exit can be found under the sound proofing. If it gets so that the condensed water vapour can't exit, it backs up and exits into the car.

anyone got a picture of the location of this, or is it nice and easy to spot?

I have had my clutch pipe replaced - I guess that must run in that sort of area....

Does the washer pipe run down that side?

My nearside footwell was absolutely sodden after a night of heavy rain - there's only two possibilities - via the scuttle area as the car was parked nose high - or I failed to close the door properly (self doubt creeping in). I haven't had a repeat in several months but I'm gonna put it to the test this weekend with the garden hose - aimed at the door not quite latched and then - front up on ramps and deluge the windscreen - I want to know once and for all !!!!!

Easiest way to check the membranes I guess would be to close the door over a chamois - you'll soon find out if there's any ingress there.

My money's still on the scuttle area in my case. Can't understand how leaves can even get into the pollen filter in the first place - that doesn't make sens to me.

If the drains are blocked by leaves then water could ingress through the pollen filter housing if that's what's meant . . . my head hurts!

Leaves get in under the scuttle pannel at both ends, and then where there are enough of them, they block up the drain holes, resulting in a build up of water as it can't drain away in the same location as the pollen filter assembly.

As this assembly is only bolted to the car it does not take much to get a get of water where it should not be.

If you mean the rear window wash pipe, then I believe so, but the water is 'clean' - no smell of windscreen wash solution.
