Rumble between 55-65mph - wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Between 55-65mph, when listening very closely I hear a rumble noise which sounds like it is coming from the rear.

I have also noticed this rumble on roundabouts (when weight is shifted to left hand side of car).

Could this be a rear wheel bearing, is this common and are the two noises realted?

Thanks all.

If it's worse cornering in one direction than in the other, it's probably a wheel bearing. Don't know about rear ones, but my vRS had a drone from the front nearside which got worse on right hand bends. I diagnosed a duff front n/s wheel bearing. The dealer said it was tyre noise. I changed the tyres. Noise still there

Back to dealers.

Result: Me right ;), them wrong :P. Bearing replaced :D:D

No - only the faulty one :)

My octy made funny noises at about 50-60 ish and at...erm... slightly higher speeds. swapped my wheels front to back and noise went, swapped 'em back and noise returned.... New tyres (fronts) and no more noises.

I am sure it is a bearing as all my tyres are the same make and all new.

I also know it is not exhaust baffels as it makes noise in neutral also.

I am just not sure if it is front or rear but it definatly seems to get worse when weight is shifted to the left.

A new rear bearing is £77 at PartCo!!!!!

What fail more on Octys, front or rear bearings?

Mine is an estate and had one rear changed at 78k and another rear at 100k. Fronts are still the original.

I know several people have had at last one rear changed at around 70-90k

I would think a TDi *may* get through fronts a little earlier thanks to the increased engine weight.
