Brake Squeal

Featured Replies

The brakes are making a hell of a noise when braking especially at low speeds, I know the discs are fine and the pads are only a couple of moths old, Pagid fast road, any idea's ? Are the rear calipers prone to seizing ??

my rear brakes squeal a bit too. mostly when used in reverse. theres plenty of meat on the pads, and the (rear) disks are barely worn. i've noticed a few taxi's sqeal, so i fugured it was just a design 'feature' lol

Sounds like you need to bed the pads in. Do some hard braking from high speed

and release before you stop. :)

good advice from vRSlen

Failing that you may need to end up taking the squealing pads out and cleaning the pad surface on a sheet of wet-and-dry abrasive paper on a flat supporting surface. Lube the abrasive with water and gently rub the pad face to get it back to clean material, then rebed the pads in .

it's not actually the pads that need bedding in, it's the discs

the best way to do it is to drive to about 40mph then firmly apply the brakes, then release, without stopping, then accelerate to about 40mph again, then repeat about 30 times...... it you go too fast it allows the discs to cool too quickly and you'll end up burnishing the surface......

and as for squeeking brakes, a pad of copper grease behind the bad works wonders, normally most mechanics will use grease behind the pads when fitting, but the grease gradually washes off over time

Further to TeflonTom's message, the best grease for this job is "Coppaslip".

my problem isn't so much as brake squeal (although they do a little when reversing) its the fact that the rear brakes on my 55 vrs seem to seize up when parked over night on the drive - any ideas why this is?

Stickiness in the handbrake linkage?

If the rear discs are rusty in the morning, maybe the pads are rusting to the discs?

yeah it's not unusual if the discs/pads are wet when you park, or get wet whilst it's stood, for the pads to stick to the disc. It will free off with a gentle jolt usually though when you move off.

:iagree:

Mine will do this the day after washing it. Quite normal. :)

thanks for the replies guys - sounds like there's nowt to worry bout :)
