Tuning boxes - do they work?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've seen THESE on ebay going for what seems a reasonable price, they promise 144ps and 344Nm form the otherwise standard pd130. Has anybody fitted one and are they too good to be true and what are the down sides to them, if any?

Am I right in assuming that they work by allowing the fuel rail to get to a higher pressure than standard or do they do something different to that?

i had one of these ran it for about 6 months or so, you can notice a difference but only at lower end of rev range but still is an increase.

down sides are your furb will smoke like mad if you try booting it at low rev's ( i found this quite amusing at times) and have tendancy to throw up fault code, although mine only did it once and was reset at mates garage, was the fuel temp code.

my view was for 20 quid they are decent as to long term isuues i am unsure to be honest.

no no no no dont do it:mad: i had 1 on 4 ruffly 6-8 months....and it fooked :( up my furby.it started running like a bag of spanners and cutting out supplier came up with differant excuses but to cut a loooooong story short took it out got a brill remap and havent looked back...

I believe it's just a primative overfueling device ('resistor' mod). Get a remap or a digital tuning box.

Thanks, I did wonder whether it was worth it or not, reading the replies I don't think I'll bother.

All I need now is my car, should get it next week if the dealer gets his finger out...

Ran one on my PD100 and it was the best vfm mod I've ever done. No smoke, but plenty more poke ;) With it on, I could happily keep up with an Ibiza FR130 :D

Had it on for best part of 30k miles, no probs and sailed through MOT's. In fact I believe another Briskodian is now running it on his car :D

Chris

i've just bough from e.bay a t50 tuning box for my 110 octy from germany.

it aleges 138 bhp we shall see

Dragon ones are probably the best ...but yes they do work very well

If it costs you under £150 don't touch it seems to be the case. I ran a dragon box for 20k+ on max setting and it never missed a beat.

If it costs you under

The analogue ones are fine to use (cheap ones), although you can buy the parts yourself and make one for WAY less than that.

Problems with that system are - it's across the full range so it is likely to increase smoke & idle revs a bit. However it works well until the CEL comes on.

If you have VAGCOM to reset the CEL it isn't all that bad ;) - also, if you stay with a reasonable value for the resistor, you can get a very nice increase in power/torque for very little money. If you go a little crazier, you can get even more at increased smoke & higher chance of CEL.

Digital tuning box - a little more fancy, it keeps the injectors 'on' for a little longer and tends to have a few 'steps' so it is generally a little smoother in operation, and although like all power increasing means it may increase smoke a bit, if used within reason it tends to not throw a CEL, give plenty of extra power/torque. Most of these are by Dragon.

Plus points are that these are not too hard to install/remove (much like the analogue one) and that it doesn't change boost levels from stock. I've had a faulty lead with this once, it was traded in with someone here and fixed under warranty (the fault). Been fine for a while since, but it has redeveloped the fault after a good six months. My problem with it is the design of the tuning box side of the connectors, it just isn't strong enough for car usage and I bet the board has cracked or the connector soldering has yet again given up. The support you get from Dragon however was excellent, very friendly and I believe they will sort this customer out again soon :)

In short - it works, but I'd think about it carefully with regards cost. A product like an AMD one-click will give about 160bhp and you can turn that on/off, you can get similar products from others too, or get a generic map cheap, it will have a similar effect :)
