how do I drain the water out of the passenger footwell please!?

Featured Replies

Hello, I am new to this site but have read lots of relevant posts, everyone sounds really friendly and helpful. I was wondering if anyone could help further so I can arm myself with knowledge before I take it to the garage.

I know there are alot of posts surrounding leaking passenger footwells but I was wondering where exaclty the drain/plug is? I know it's under the carpet, but is this something I can do myself (bearing in mind I don't know alot about cars, or carpet fitting for that matter!) because I had a look earlier and I wouldn't know where to start lifting the carpet.

Also I believe there are electric things under the front passenger footwell (ECU I think?). My felicia is 1996, 1.3 petrol without power steering, is it likely that it has electric things under there? My mechanic doesn't seem to think so (because of it's age) but if it does I am concerned that I need to deal with it sooner than I thought.

Thanks for any help!

Laura

ok. the ecu is in the engine bay, so no probs there. the only prob is that the water is probley coming down the inside of the baulkhead, there we do have electrics, not good. next time it rains, open your glove box and pull the tray out of the bottom. look down the bottom left and see if the can see those evil little drops of electrics killing water.

as for the drain plug, well not a clue. try looking under the car and seeing if you can find it there. then you at least know were to start looking.

hope some of this helps.

Hello,

Thank you that definately helps! And puts my mind at rest! I did have a hunt around earlier and the foam seems dry. But the glovebox and looking under the car is a great start, thanks again!

Laura

no probs.

I've just dried my carpet out on the passenger side, it was a real pain. If the carpet feels really wet there's likely to be a lot of water underneath, it gathers in the felt underlay and in all the crevices in the floor pan. Hopefully yours isn't so bad yet. If I remember correctly there is a drain plug under a sticky square cover under the carpet but I doubt this will get much out because in my case at least, it was so sopping and due to the shape of the floor. I spent most of the day with a vax machine. You can prise the carpet from the edges of the trim and lift it to some extent. Taking out the whole carpet is a bit of a job. Check the carpet in the rear too, water may have got there. Feel under the passenger seat, there's a join in the carpet and you'll be able to get your hand under it to feel if it's wet underneath. I removed the passenger seat to lift the carpet, not too difficult, just a few allen screws. Mechanic could do that in a few minutes. Hope that's some help.

I had water in the driver's footwell, but it was coming through the door. The horizontal window seals are not really seals at all, they're just wiper blades, and are not designed to be completely waterproof. Therefore water will always get into the door. That's why there are weep holes at the bottom of the door. My problem was the membrane behind the door card (or lining). It had been torn, and so water was coming down from the window even when shut, into the door cavity, through the tears in the membrane, down the inside of the door card, trickling out from the speaker grill, underneath and slightly over the sill strip and onto the carpet, forming quite a puddle. This weekend I'll cut another piece of polythene or similar transparent plastic sheet, glue it to the door having cut very small apertures for the speaker cables, electric mirror cables, door release rod and window winder mechanism, and it should be problem solved! Having taken the door card off several times I'm now an expert at the job, completing it in much less than five minutes, so if anyone needs any help, do please ask.

Best wishes,

Mr Music

Hello

Thanks for the ideas and help! Not sure i am up to taking the door off though! I asked the mechanic to have a look but if/when it fills up again it sounds like I should manage to take the carpet up under the driver's seat.

At the minute there's no puddle cos it is freezing before it gets in to the car!!

Laura

is freezing before it gets in to the car!!

so am i... :D

If you know someone with a dehumidifier, and a garage, you could try just leaving the car in the garage with the dehumidifier running (inside the car) for some hours. That should get rid of a fair amount. You can also soak up water from the carpet with a sponge or similar if there's an actual puddle.

Pinky has a wet passenger floor, the foam behind the dash is wet. I'm assuming the windscreen is leaking. If so can i use clear bathroom sealer or is it a trip to Halfrauds for some proper stuff.........Thanks

I'm assuming the windscreen is leaking.

And I'm assuming that you've hit the nail on the head :D

This might help: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/felicia-fun-forman/dripping-my-foot/90624/?highlight=windscreen

When I encountered this problem I first tried silicone sealant without success so it was the glazier. He told me that only way to be completely sure is to replace the rubber seal for a new, soft and flexible. Cost me

And I'm assuming that you've hit the nail on the head :D

Thanks for that.........I was wondering about the seal, it's as hard as rock. might try some sealent as you know we get very little rain here despite the fact it rains for 365 days a year  failing that i'll get a new rubber seal fitted... cheers ....:)...........Andy

If you are confident that the windscreen isnt leaking then why not use a chamoix leather to soak the worst up so that it is just damp. Then i would make sure your heater (hot) is directed on the floor until it eventually dries it out.

Just drill some random holes in the floor, problem solved!!! :P
