Sudden Appetite for Oil

Featured Replies

Have checked our 2.0TDi religiously for oil level since we bought in March last year, despite the ridiculously difficult dipstick (why isn't the end orange?!) every 500 miles until 6,000 - no visible consumption during that time. Then let it lapse until the weekend when suddenly at 7,000 miles it was right at the bottom of the acceptable range and took 1.5 litres to get it back to the top.

Consumption be a problem?

Hi

Before my Octy VRS2 - I has a MK5 golf GTTDI 140 - this used oil - I did not realise how low it was one day , until the oil light came on!

Again took a large dollup of long life oil to get it back up to a good level!

Cheers

Steve

Mine used about 1 Litre of oil in 4,000 miles, but since the last service some 6,000 miles ago I have not needed to topup and the oil is still on max.

I think the PD seems to have a thirst for oil that calms down as the mileage goes up.

My PD 140 has done about 31,000 miles now and the orange oil light came on last week, it was serviced 10,000 miles ago.

Overall I have put about 4 litres in it and that's not including the oil change on the aforementioned service.

I identified an oil leak on the front of the block and mentioned it on the service, it is now apparent that they cleaned it up and nothing more as the huge oil stain is back. Thats where my expensive oil is going so I might as well just pour it down the front of the engine to save time.

Leaks aside, my engine does have a thirst for the synthetic stuff.

Should I manually check my oil - not done so since new (July 06)?

Do I really believe that the Orange light will save me having to look?

Oh and I have only covered 3,500 miles

I check mine on a semi regular basis but I do over 1000 miles a week minimum so more often than not the ORANGE oil light will come up before I get a chance to check the dipstick.

As long as you top up quickly after the light comes on then I can't see it being a problem.

I keep a litre of the good stuff in the little pocket in the rear door, fits perfectly.

I've had my car since the end of July and i've done over 32,000 miles

It's in at the dealership soon for a rumbly rear wheel bearing :(

How do you know the oil warning is working? Check it NOW!

Check the Oil , the Water , the Screen wash every 2 weeks total time 4 mins max . Result secure in knowing all is ok . Thought every one did this with their own car or am i just a sad concerned owner . only time will tell :)

Have you read the Owner's Manual? This says:

It is normal for the engine to consume oil. The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5l/1000 km depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate your vehicle. The oil consdmption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5000 kilometres.

One should therefore check the oil level at regular intervals, preferably every time after the fuel tank is filled or after driving long stretches.

My 2.0 TDI's oil light came on at a similar mileage (7-7.5k). Required 1 litre.

Then had it serviced at 10,000 miles and then at fixed 10k intervals.

Never required topping up again until approx. 47k when oil light came on.

Then engine failed at 54k and the rest is history.

Ive just had my 2.0Tdi in for a clutch problem but while it was in they put in litre of oil.

This staggered me as I had only put some oil in last week and discussed it with the mechanic.

He says that the official figure is 1L oil per 800miles.

Obviously this is a conservative figure from VW group to cover themselves but does seem excessive.

Mines done about 57k miles and seems to be using more oil now.

I guess the moral is check each week if like me you do a lot of mileage and dont just rely on the oil light coming on

I use about a litre every 7.5k

I put in my car aprox 3 l of oil last year in a trip in Europe (6kmiles) and I belive is normal due the way I was drive the car.

After the first service the consumption it was normal 0.5 l /10kmiles

then i change the car for a 07 reg elegance version

I use about a litre every 7.5k

Mine is remapped though so it smokes a little more than standard! ;)
