Subwoofer Installation

Featured Replies

I 've done a search on sub installation and looked at most of the stuff that came up.

I'm about to install one in my Fabia vRS and want to know if it is possible to power it but not connecting directly to the battery? I know this is the recommended way but are there other options ie cigarette lighter plug?

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend trying to drive one through the cig lighter - the wiring and fuse won't be up to it.

If you want to make it easily removable then run a fused cable from the battery and have a quick release cable on the power leads before they get to the sub/amp

What you can do is you know on top of the battery theres a little fuse box. You can start your connections from there.. however this is connecting it via the battery. You kind of want to use the main battery plus separate fuse as your going to draw alot of ampage out (mines 200W RMS for 6x9's plus 600W RMS for sub). Cig lighter wont let you have 40A's im afraid.. things will trip and burn :P think cig lighters are really low.. like 5A or something, so you wont kill urself over a cig lighter.

Or.. you can replace the cig lighter fuse for a higher ampage one i suppose then it would act as a high power source.. But i have no experience in this and it could be a little dangerous i thought since you have alot of ampage very near your fingers.

lol this has made me think about a friends car, he ran a pc subwoofer from his cigarette lighter for about 6months shame he cant hear sound like me, the bass was in time with the alternator lol, might be some thing to be weary of if thinking about using the cigarette lighter.

are you thinking about using a powered sub or an seperate amp or sub?

You have to run a seperate power cable, its not to difficult, if your ever up near glasgow, i'll show you how ;)

You could try posing in the ICE section so other than people who just look in the Fabia forum will see it.

Thanks for the advice guys!

It's a powered sub. The sub has a 20A fuse, I looked in the book and the cigarette lighter is 180w which works out at 15A. Looks like I'll have to get my hands a little dirty and figure out how to connect it to the battery!

thanks again!

Yup, as the guys have already said, all you do is run a power cable directly from the battery to the amp (with a fuse as close to the battery as possible. Then ground the amp to the chasis near to where you install it (the boot i guess?). Use the remote control wire to the headunit to control when the amp is switched on/off. The most tricky part that you'll have is working out the best way to run the cables to the back of the car!

That guide looks excellent. Thanks very much for that. Going to give it a go this weekend!

I can vouch for the documented method, it's how I did mine.

Only top half nudity allowed tho ;)

If only someone shown me that link earlier!! lol damn it.. I had to wire it through the mud flaps of the car!! grr!!

oh and slightly off topic still.. where has people put their ground?? I couldnt find an unpainted spot anywhere in the boot so i hooked it to the rear door hook (only bit i can see which is unpainted..!

There is a few things you can mount the earth to around the rear light cluster.

Fletch555, I almost went for the same setup as you! I'm about to install the Sony GT300s and was going to get the same Sub and Amp package but ended up opting for the Fli Trap 10 active just to save a bit of cash.

Just out of curiousity, did you notice a difference with the PD160 intake? I'm going to fit one soon I think. And what do you think of the ARB? I know there are many threads already but curious to hear what you think of those two mods.

Thanks again for the sub install guide!

The setup is pretty kool...being able to interface with the iPod is very handy as the radio can control the iPod menu.

As for the PD160 intake, I noticed no difference whatsoever.(In saying that I didn't have the car long when I put it in so I was probably still not used to the performance) The Jabba ARB is a must really. The handling was all over the place before but it sorts out the body roll a fair bit and reduces understeer a bit I've noticed.

I had these visions of wiring going on the outside of the car and disapearing under the wheel arches when I read that.

I'm not practical and had mine fitted by a mobile installer. I'm glad I did after seeing what he had to do. He did a great job.

As a matter of interest, how do people secure the subwoofer in place?

www.ch4vcar.com

only joking... wish I had a decent audio system to play my music

mines not "secured" in place, i have some tall profile large bolts which go through the false floor and "pin" the sub in place means i can easily quickly remove the sub when loading stuff in the boot. i do know that some people have used strong velcro to secure there subs in place too

Yeh I just have some elastic straps that wrap around it and on to the two anchor points and it doesn't seem to move around that much. It makes it very easy to remove it quickly, just curious what other people do.
