Fitting oil pressure gauge

Featured Replies

Ummm, how do you do it? :o

Getting one through Ebay, and not entirely sure how it works. :D

I suspect it also has no actual wiring kit with it, so I think I'll be needing the sender, etc. It's an analogue gauge too - much more a fan of needles than LCD screens.

Edit: What is the "norm" for a PD130 oil pressure - say for at idle, and then at full chat?

There is a pressure switch in the oil filter body IIRC so I suspect you could tee off of that.

Oh, cool. And that housing is pretty accessable too. Will bear that in mind thanks. Still need to get oil temp gauge, and coolant temp gauge, and also EGT. My car's going to be a hive of sensors. :D

i agree with stu, use the the outlet for the pressure switch with a tee-piece... might be difficult to find one with the right thread pitch tho.... iirc it's a 10x1mm fine pitch thread..... failing that just remove the pressure switch completely and put the sender in on it's own.....

IIRC there is a 5mm allen key blanking plug in the oil filter housing next to the switch, i think its used on the Ibizas as the early ones had oil temp gauges

do you know if the oil filter housing on the 2.0 petrol engine has a blank one which isn't used??

Not that would be handy. I look forward to seeing what kind of adaptor my gauge comes with. The words "goodrich hoses" have been mentioned already too.

you have to be carefull using brake hose to supply oil fittings, the oil is a lot hotter than brake fluid, and certain types of hose get 'eaten' by oils/petrol/diesel/etc

The Tee pieces are readly available in either 1" OR 1.5" long cost £6.95 but sometimes the hole in the TEE piece ends up facing towards the engine block making it vey hard to install some of the larger sender unit,.. There is also a remote tee piece, come's connected to a 18" long briaded oil hose, connects into the OEM sender location,..these cost £19.95..

also another quick note,.. some treads of sender units are not self sealing, so use a small amount of liquid PTFE making sure not to let any over spill into the oil ways.

there are also y piece fittings available too, should make it easier to attach the senders without fouling on the engine

IIRC there were some pics on tdiclub on this, it is VERY tight with the OEM cabling for the original sensor, but it should be ok :)

Lemme know what you end up going for + pics as I still need to get one sorted for mine, I'm after oil temp & pressure, dunno if I could do that using a t piece or something.

Btw Jason I've asked for separate pricing up of the catchment tank, will let you know once I know myself what the cost might be :)

I discovered all sorts of weird and wonderful sensors whilst fumbling about blindly looking for the coolant temperature sensor on SWMBO's car (that's before I used my loaf and thought to follow the coolant pipes around the circuit!:D )

One of them (and this is on an MPi engine, mind) went directly into the side of the block, and was held in by a BFO nut. I suspect this might have been the sensor that triggers the low oil pressure light - well OK, I can't think of what else it might be! Having said this, there's not exactly a lot of space down the front of the PD engine, and I can't ever recall seeing a similar sensor on my vRS, so this might well qualify as the most irrelevant post ever! :sofahide:

Hope this helps, and apologies for wasting your time if it doesn't! ;)

iirc the oil pressure switch on the mpi engine is screwed into the cylinder head:D

It was a couple of inches below the bottom of this picture, towards the right-hand side of the engine, and definitely below the flange that I assume is where head and block meet (just visible below the black plastic cover for the sparkplug wiring):

 Maybe I'm thinking of something completely different. Wouldn't be the first time...

yeah, that's it just below where the head and block meet
