Any advice welcomed....

Featured Replies

... went to stay at a mate's this weekend and was well impressed with his wireless router that he's got installed. I'm currently re-locating the 'puter upstairs and the thought of running cables wasn't too appealing hence the delay. So, anyone got any advice for a techno numpty on what's the best combo of router and interface card? Any ideas on costs also appreciated. Ta muchly. :D

NetGear stuff is pretty decent - for the prices on the 54Mbps stuff have a word with ffelan, but off the top of my head thing they're something like

I wouldn't expect over 100M using wireless if I were you. All the reviews I have read of this type of thing (they basically combine two 54M wireless connections to offer >100M ) have said you'll be lucky to get any more than 40M sustained. This is still more than you'll get with a normal 11g though.

Don't believe the hype...

Jimmy, I've got the Netgear DG834G combined ADSL modem and wireless router, along with the 54Mbps PCI card. The range with all of the WEP security switched on was pretty useless - through one floor, one stud wall and one solid block wall I could barely get a signal. However, I switched to securing via the MAC address and now get a pretty reliable quoted 48Mbps signal (from the Netgear utility). Anyway, it's fast enough for internet browsing, which is all Fen Jr uses it for!

I have a D-Link DI-714P wireless broadband router, and a wireless D-Link pci card in the pc upstairs. OK, so it aint the fastest/latest , but then its just for net access for my daughters pc. It was easy to set up, and hasnt let me down yet. It also has its own built in print server (wired).

Netgear WGR614 router and WG311 PCI card with NTL broadband.

I wanted to install a router from my set top box(downstairs) connection, to use the pc upstairs.

Took 6 days to get it working, still has the odd 'issue' now and again, but i can live with it.

It took 6 days to get working because, i too, am a numpty:D. I had never had broadband or a network before. Learned as i went along, worth while in the end.

Jump in at the deep end is my motto:)
