Wear Indicators

Featured Replies

They're at 2.0mm, not 1.6mm, so tyres which have just reached the indicators at one point per tyre quite emphatically are legal, and not just marginally!

I had some tyres on my last car, that had the wear indicators at 3mm.

Cant remember what make they were, nothing special!!

I can say it wasn't Dunlop, Michelin or Vredstein. Might be Contis?

Perhaps they're actually "start saving for a new set of tyres" indicators ?

I think German tyres have their wear indicators at 3mm as that's when it is recommended they be changed (these tyre's performance deteriorates dramatically after that apparently)....

Seriously, IIRC we have some of the most lax tread depth laws in Europe, and most places they (at 2mm) mark the limit of legal tread.

Yeah Chris, I'd a feeling that way too, hence the suggestion that R1's tyres with the 3mm ones were Contis.

I start saving when they get near to 3mm, and will change at 3mm in the winter or 2mm in the summer.

Likewise with this car, after having the traction control cut in at 50mph in top (full throttle) on some unseen (due to extreme darkness) standing water.

You have a 110 TDI don't you Ken?

I had exactly the same once of twice, not full throttle, but suddenly TC cutting in at 50 on the M/Way with 5-6mm on every tyre.

Scary as hell!

What worried me was more it being unexpected than just that it happened; I've had similar issues with deep (and seen) puddles on previous cars with no TC, and wasn't that bothered.

I had the Furbys tyres rotated at 19k and the former fronts were at the wear indicators (Contisport IIs) - at 32k they were still on and legal

AND they privided better grip in the dry (science innit!)

I agree with above about 3mm is the best as performance is seriously downhill onwards esp in the wet even tho they are legal. I think top gear did a test thing and 3mm was crap..

3mm (even on rubbish Dunlops) is fine as long as the road's just wet; the problem (as eleswhere here) comes when you try and apply lots of torque in standing water on that tread depth!
