Hi all,

My fiancee and I received a very disturbing text message yesterday and after checking through our phones and prev bills we still don't know the number. When we call it the number is permanately engaged.

I know there are tracking companies on the net but they all charge a minumum of 6 months registration (over

Contact your service provider and get them to block the number from being able to contact you. If it persists (somehow) then inform the police...

Rob.

PM me the number and I'll check if it belongs to T-Mobile.

You need to report it to your own service provider. I'm afraid I don't think you can bar SMS from just one number. It may be all or nothing.

I'm not sure how knowing which network the sender is on will help but http://ukphoneinfo.com will tell you which networks have which numbers.

Don't forget that a number can be transferred from any network to any other so that site can only tell for certain which one it started with.

Hi Antony,

Listening to Radio 2 on the way home tonight there was a piece on mobile phone scams. Apparently you get a text message saying you have won a prize and to call a given number, the number is a premium rate line and of course there is no prize. Obviously the example they gave is a blatant scam, but could your message be something like this ?

On the other hand I have received messages from unknown numbers in the past ranging from "I need help - come quick" to "put the oven on". If the message wasn't personal to you and your Fiancee (ie no names) and you've only got one then it may have been a wrong number.

Hope you don't get anymore anway.

As with e-mail, if you get an SMS from someone you don't know, offering something that's too good to be true, then delete it.

If it sounds dodgy, it probably is ;)

Antony,

No doubt about it, report it to your provider, they will have something along the lines of BT's Nuisance Calls Bureau to deal with this.

I heard on the radio today that the latest mobile phone scam is some kind of message saying you have voicemail. You go to ring your voicemail, but it dials this other number and it's

Just report it to the Police. They have ways and means of contacting the relevant phone companies.

If its a contract phone then they contact the registered user or terminate the contract. If its a Pay as you Go phone then they can nuke the phone and barr it from being re-activated.

Have you seen the article in todays' Telegraph about computer generated number ringing that calls off after one ring , so you probably miss it . if you return the call its a
