Petrol Flap Not Opening

Featured Replies

Finished work last night, Fuel light on so decided to stop off for fuel. It was a cold one here last night, -4 when I got into the car.

Anyway drove to the petrol station, got out, pressed the petrol flap and it wouldn't open     .

So tried pressing it a few times thinking it was stuck, poured some warm water down the edges (thanks to nice lady in the Tesco office  ). Locked/Unlocked the car a number of times to try free it but It wasn't opening.

So just before I gave up I slipper the Tesco Clubcard under the opening egde, and hey presto it opened.

Bascially the locking mechanism seemed okay but it was the spring loaded mechanism which pops the flap out must have been frozen.

A relative had exactly the same.

The dealer needed to fiddle around with the sprung thing behind as it had moved, and hey presto all opens ok now :)

had this on mine - dealer replaced spring loaded 'plunger' been ok since.

Make sure your plastic (chain) which holds the cap on, is not fouling the door.

Had the same with mine ;)

Mines been playing up for a long time now:mad: I have to poke and push for a good 30 seconds before it will shift.

The cars going in soon for some others issues so ill add it to the list of things to sort.

Can you not open it from the boot in case of emergency? Should be in the manual. You could try giving the mechanism a quick blast with a blow torch on cold mornings. BTW I'll up the offer to €11K.

Its working okay now, and before the incident. I think it was just frozen, although if it persists during normal conditions it'll be getting sorted.

In my case it wasn't a case that it was actually stuck and locked closed, just a case that the plunger mechanism wouldn't pop it open. Hence the reason I posted to tell people if it does occur and your stuck try sliding a card behind it and see if it'll open.

I had a quick look of the manual while blocking the pump :o , but didn't come across anything.

Handy spatula in our case (don't ask why it was in the car because I don't know either)

From what I hear its a Mk2 you need ;)

:finger:

Can't afford it now after replacing both front window regulators and the central convenience unit & loom

Mine sticks too.

But I usually have my credit card in hand at the pumps anyway....

Sorry about that, Mcgyver told me yours was giving a lot of hassle at the moment:( ...I could resist after your comments ;)

Mine sticks - started only recently.

I find i can get it open by trying to open it, then when it sticks lockign the car! That kicks the petrol cap out enough to get at it to open fully.

Of course then I hvae to remember to put diesel in not petrol. Mine must be a diesel cap then!

Mine seems to only be an issue during heavy frost. Its seems to work grand now.

Bingo cheers! It was this, although I am sort of suprised to discover the petrol flap is just held in by the spring action of the flap? I know a locking pin comes across when the car is locked, but when unlocked it just seems to be the spring that keeps the flap closed.

Have to pass the honours onto swmbo for the fix :D
