Sorry to be the bringer of bad news Tony but I would imagine that as far as a 14 yo is concerned there is only one mp3 player. The 20gb iPod. 250 quid if you're lucky.

No way He'd build his own with a combined piezo crystal / used solar cell with hamster power for night time .It would be a serious trip risk/electrocution risk and frighten the hamster (as one of the goldfish died yesterday No 2 playing Warhammer in some way (haven't worked that one out either),

Brought a Creative Labs 4.0G as it was on price and required spec
