Cheap (sub

Featured Replies

I'm more than likely going to be changing my 2mile cycle commute to a 64 mile round trip on dual carriageways.

I'd be looking for a cheap yet reliable diesel/LPG/Chip fat burning car (or even fiesta type small van)

Running the Octavia will cost me about

peugeot 106 diesel.... they are cheap as chips and will run around on a thimble full of fuel all day

106 or AX diesel.

Should be able to find something in your budget.

If you fancy petrol then a Mk1 nissan micra should do the job

Yep, I agree regarding the diesel Pug.

Escort vans are ten a penny too.

Mk3 Polo Coupe / Sqaureback

VAG, Reliable and cheap to maintain / run

I have a G40 - but have been in all other models - they are not the best made / quality VAG motor - but will do you for a daily commute and can be picked up and insured very cheaply.

Would avoid anything which was expensive to buy when new, as chances are something'll go wrong and it'll still be expensive to repair.

That said, Volvos seem to do well in bangernomics...

Rob.

Early diesel clio. :) Don't expect PAS...

Felicia 1.9D

you know it makes sense

my diesel Astra was a bargain :)

Heard that the cav diesel is better as its the izuzu lump with Adjustable FPR:thumbup:

my Astra is an early one, with the Isuzu lump :)

I just know what some people are going to say to this, but a Citroen BX diesel. Mega comfy, mid-60s mpg possible from the 1.9l non-turbo whilst still keeping up with the traffic, should run forever with regular oil changes and cambelt kits as required.

Super comfy.

Two words though - green balls.

I'll see that, and raise oil-filled tubes.

Found a rather "nice" cavalier diesel for sale for £375 with MOT and tax until August. 127,000 miles.

Its a GLS which means electric front windows and mirrors, sunroof "velour" seats.

Ch@valier makes sense for a dual cabbageway hack.

Is it reasonable to expect 60MPG from an old diesel?

i think 60mpg might be pushing it a bit, but it wont be far off i'd have thought...

is that with the gm engine or the isuzu one??

Gotta be a Mondeo diesel :P

The isuzu one - apparently the most reliable of the two.

Dunno about the Ch@valier D, but 60mpg was possible from the non-turbo PSA XUD with a manual box (and with a 60mph average speed on a long mostly dual cabbageway run, so not exactly taking it easy either).

The isuzu one - apparently the most reliable of the two.

:iagree:

the gm ones have a tendancy to eat head gaskets for breakfast!! the other thing the gm ones do on the indirect injection version is the pre-combustion chamber cracks and pops out and makes a very interesting mess of the piston crown

the isuzu ones are a pig to work on but they are much better engines, only common trouble i've seen on them is cracking the cylinder head when they get really really hot and overheat, normally caused by neglect in most cases...and by the owner continuing to drive on then it overheats:)
