Reducing Understeer In Fabia Vrs

As Title really, is there anymore i can do to reduce the understeer in my fab?

Current mods are:

KW varient 1 Coilovers:)

Jabba Rear ARB:D

215 tyres:thumbup:

And front strut brace

Thats all i can think that would affect handling.

Any suggestions considered but i'll stop at getting a mid-engined car:rofl:

I have a roughly similar setup and there is NO understeer.

Not sure what to suggest. Does it understeer on 16"s?

I thought it'd be fairly 'sorted' too. What did you drive before beedie or are you comparing the drive with something else? Has the car always felt like this? Did you notice improvements when the rear ARB went on? Have you done the upgrades listed in any sequence, or did the suspension changes and ARB happen at the same time?

Suggestions in no particular order....

SEAT Cupra front wishbone rear bushes.

Modify and align the suspension for maximum castor

H brace or lower strutbrace

Battery to the rear

Bizarre but "Eibach or similar" stronger front ARB

Limited slip diff is the next step! :)

That will basically provide more power to the outside wheel when cornering, instead of feeding similar power to the inside one, which is what pushes you out when on throttle around bends.

As for understeer when just coasting - not a lot you can do now. That heavy engine is what really hinders.

I second the cupra bushes - they're some pics on here as well. I'm waiting for mine to come along with a Leon splitter.....

Find a SPECIALIST company to track the car, not your average tyre dealer. people who are used to tracking performance cars , race cars etc throw away the factory settings & track it from scratch. That can dial out a lot of the Understeer if thats the problem.

I use Powerstation in Cheltenham PowerStation but thats I guess a tadge toooooooooooo far for you, if you call them they might know someone at your end of the country (sorry in the next country)

With your suspension setting it's hard to think of understeer, Maybe its your tires thats causing it? My car used to understeer like anything on the previous tires i had

take out the 1.9tdi and either relocate it to the back seats or replace it with a 1.8t :D

If understeer is a real problem I'd increase the spring rate on the front.

If understeer is a real problem I'd take the rear ARB off.

Limited slip diff will be the biggest improvement.

A decent set of tyres is a must.

Get it professionally set up - the difference will be astonishing.

Cupra bushes made quite a difference on mine, but more in feel than in actual handling. :)

I suggest that you leave the ARBs as are, a thicker front one will make the handling more understeery, and the back is already amongst the best available. :thumbup:

Its never going to handle amazingly (my OEM focus knocks spots off my "sorted" vRS in the handling stakes).

too nose heavy - forget it you cant polish a turd, just like the car for what it is.

I thought a LSD would increase understeer on a front wheel drive car.

As both front wheels are driven with the same power it makes it harder to steer and it then wants to travel straight, thus increasing understeer.

are your front tyres XL (extra load bearing) I find this made a difference on mine (both with pirelli p'nero's and avon's) the stiffer sidewall doesn't roll under the wheel so much, and gives a 'tighter' front end :)

The conventional wisdom is that a bigger rear ARB = less understeer while a bigger front ARB = more understeer. However, my experience with front wheel drive cars leads me to the conclusion that "nose heavy" FWD cars (like the vRS) can benefit more from a larger front ARB than rear in fighting understeer. I suspect the conventional wisdom is based on RWD cars, which tend to have more balanced weight distribution.

The dynamics are quite different with FWD and the roll angles on a relatively soft suspension allow large camber changes that reduce traction and directional stability at the front. It would be great if we could see some actual back to back tests. I see Eibach has a 22mm front bar for the Fabia. Does anyone make a larger one?

Clarkson had an interesting vent on LSDs on FWD cars last week. "Twitchy"

Spend the money on learning how to drive it properly :P If you are getting understeer, your entry speed into the corner is too high, which has the knock on effect of killing your exit speed!

The great thing about modding the driver is that it's transferable to any car you drive. ;)

Thanks guys, some exellent suggestions there.

I'll try and get my suspension set up properly and look into the cupra bushes at the same time.

Who makes LSD's for the fab and what kind of cost am i looking at?

Kinda on-topic - can anyone recommend a decent suspension setup place in the North West? Have been meaning to get mine tweaked following Eibach fitment and the Jabba ARB. So I'll get it done once my new wheels are on.

jut what i was thinking Steve, could we make this a sticky with all the contacts with 4 wheel alignment centres. for starters anyone got any contacts for Notingham, Lincoln or Pterborough way:)
