DIY 30k service costs??

Featured Replies

I understand that i would need oil, filter and pollen filter to do this service. Can anyone advise on how much it would cost to get the bits? Also where is a good place to get oil from and which type would you reccomend?

Cheers

Oil - £10 Quantum Synta (sliver can - very good)

Ol filter - £5 (approx)

Sump bung - £1

Pollen filter - £10 iirc

£26 then (approx).

All from your local VAG dealer.

That is very reasonable!

Thats decided it for me, it i will be servicing it myself now the warranty has run out.

serviced my Octavia yesterday

new oil, oil filter, plugs, air filter, wiper blades.

all for 72 euro (Ireland  ) and an afternoon messing with me car !!!

Is it just me - or are the octavia spark plugs the worst ever to change ???

I think Im going down the same route by doing it myself and fully documenting it all with dates and receipts.

Phoned my local stealer today for prices for the stuff needed for a 30k service.

They quoted me :-

Oil filter

Oil filter -

Not a bad guess then...lol

Yes you were very close.

apart from the oil;)

I assume i will be ok using some 5w30 semi synthetic oil if i intend to service my car every 10k??

Cheers again.

Yeah sounds good.

Was the £22 for the silver synta oil though?

Yeah sounds good.

Was the

Probably not then as its more than upto the job but fairly cheap.

can i offer some advice ?

i bought a pella pump to do mine,30 odd quid and i never have to get under the car to change the oil again,i even managed to get the oil filter off from above.plenty of rag and little hands helped.

it's changed the way i think about doing it now.much less of a chore, and while its draining, i can tinker with other bits and bobs.

what is a pella pump???

and what does it do?

Just googled it and see what you mean.

Are these just as efficient as the traditional method?

Its the way a fair few new garages do it. Health and safety regs state its the way it should be done. No need ot touch dirty oil then and then its collected from the waste tank directly.

its a little slow, but like i said you can leave it to syphon off as to do your pollen filter/plugs.

i was dubious that it got everything out,but it seems to do the trick.

a guy on cupranet went as far to take the sump plug off afterwards and not a drop came out.just make sure you're on level ground.

I should also say that my car is on variable servicing at the moment but i am wanting to set it back to fixed when i do the 30k service. The indicator on the dash has not come on yet but i want it back on fixed, how do i do this please?

The trip button method will work, its in your handbook.

slightly off topic, but.how can i reset my service indicator ross? is that in there too?or is it haynes?

mine has showed me a spanner every day for the last couple of years.(2001 vrs)

Its in ya handbook

its been on my list .cheers.

Did my service today.

The pollen filter is a little tight to get out but it went ok, the old one was very dirty is this normal??

I could not get the oil filter off from the top of the car, it was quite tight. Got under the car and removed the small splash guard thing and got the filter undone ok that way.

Whilst the new oil was working its way down to the sump i also took the chance to mend my drivers side headlight washer, the pipe had come off behind the bumper . I managed to get away with undoing the bumper fixings just at that side of the car i could then just get in and re attach the pipe to the washer:thumbup:

Anyway new oil all in now and car running nice and sweet the total cost altogether was about £33, a bargain IMHO and i will be doing all my own servicing myself from now on. Now it would be good if i could get a "stamp" in my service book somehow:mischief: ( i have a plan for this;) )

After doing my car i changed the oil and filter on my wifes 12yr old Nissan micra that has got 108k miles on it:eek: and adjusted the clutch cable too. Bit annoying thought as the oil and filter cost £22 which is probably not far off what the car is worth:rofl:

I have had a top day:)

Rob

good to hear rob.

today's productivity took the form of,fit samco/forge turbo intake pipe(bit of a bugger on the turbo)

fit my new(virtually) front brake discs.

dropping the oil next week.

oh better do the pollen filter too,any tips/pitfalls?

Can I ask what oil you ended up using? Are you changing it to fixed servicing?

I was thinking of the turbo intake pipe as mod to do but i am still debating if it is worth the effort or not.

As for the pollen filter it was fairly easy, i just opened the bonnet and pulled the scuttle panel off a little bit at the passenger side. It was a bit of a squeeze getting the old one out and new one in but it is only a few minutes do do the job.
