Hi, have been trying to sort this problem for a while now.

Had the car in at the skoda garage regarding my rev counter not working and they told me that i need a new hall sender.

Have looked through Butts catalogue and also through my Skoda parts pc catalogue and can find, what is called a speed sensor, and this is just the same as the Hall sensor in my haynes.

Does anyone know if this is the same part but under different names, i.e. hall sender/hall sensor/speed sensor.

Would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on this, as i am now confused. lol

What engine is it?

If its a 1.3 its on the front of the engine.

Yeh its a 1.3 and i know where it is, but just confused as to weather what i have been told that i need a Hall sender, is actually also known as a hall sensor or speed sensor.

Hall sender is usually a camshaft sensor, a speed sensor is usually the crank sensor.

But both can be refered to a speed or impulse senders as effectively they do the same job just on different parts of the engine.

depends on which engine, but on the 1.6 engine if the hall sensor(mounted on the distributor) isn't working the engine wont run. my guess is your rev counter isn't working for another reason

On the 1.3 they will always flag a fault on a code read if the engine isn't running.

Just in case anyone doesn't know,,the HAll effect is an electric current generated by a rotating rotor, half of which is a magnet. As a heating engineer we find them on modern combi boilers where water rorates the rotor and sends a current to the electronics to turn the boiler on.

hi thanks to Alfie 168 for the education on the workings of the combi. I had thought the water pressure did it.........

but back to Skoda......im told my new fabia 1.9tdi has camshaft sensor problem causin it to sputter at around 1900 rpm sometimes

any clues...................

Also a 12" Apple PowerBook has a Hall Sensor to put the machine into sleep mode.
