What on earth happened?

Featured Replies

Last Friday evenings trip home in that snow storm really got me worried. It took me one and a half hours to travel just 2 miles. :finger:

My problem started when I tried to drive into the village - It's up hill for about half a mile. Well, I started at the bottom and very very slowly made progress to the top. However, just as I got to the crest of the hill, my dashboard lit up like a Christmas Tree.

The tranction control indicator flashed from the bottom of the hill to the top, but then my hand brake light came on and flashed continuously, the ABS warning light illuminated and then the traction control switched itself off and refused to work anymore.

I got home.

Next day, I check brake fluid levels (OK), Handbrake light extinguished when the car started. Traction Control button now worked but ABS still lit up. I decided to take the car into my local dealer, but as soon as I braked the ABS light went out. All seems OK. Anyone any Idea what happened?

Chunks of ice inside your wheels or brakes?

The ABS light can be bought on when the front wheels are going significantly faster than the rears. This normally happens when you put a car on a rolling road.

In this case it fixes itself after a very very short (read "a few feet") normal drive.

It is possible that the front wheels could have been going very quickly and the rears stationary (or backwards) in snow and ice.

It can also happen if you stall and start whilst rolling - I try not to make a habit out of this :o - had to pull over, turn off engine, start again & it went straight away :)

Is it possible that the ABS pump overheated?

I think Goochies explanation is the most likely, nothing to worry about imho.

Have had a similar experience the other year with mine.

Was driving in icy conditions when the traction was working overtime up a slope, car started sliding backwards with wheels going forwards. Dash it up like a light show. Managed to stop the car restart and went a different way, abs light went out almost straight away.
