Octy vRS cam belt change

Featured Replies

What is involved in a cam belt change? I have just been quoted 300 for the change - plus 250 for 40k mls service plus uprated brake fluid.

Does anyone have an idea of what skoda recommend changing during a cam belt change? The garage is recommending water pump, tensioners, cam belt and a few other things - sold as a complete kit and all changed at the same time.

Anyone else heard of this?

Definatley water pump, the plastic impellor is a known weak spot. I would also do tensioners and of course the belt. £300 seems to be about the going rate for this, but the service price seems a bit high to me.

cheers mannyo,

just spoke to a skoda dealer to compare prices to the independant quote as above. he said that they wouldnt necessarily replace the water pump, only if there was play or a leak.

RE: 40K mls service. the price did include uprated brake fluid - is this still expensive?

Id get the water pump done as a matter of principle, you should be able to get both done (cambelt kit and waterpump) for £300 or under (Skoda dealer did mine for £280 - Independent for £235)

OK - nice one. Looks like the independant place is a little expensive for what they are doing. Not mentioning the place but they are a recommended VAG/Skoda PERFORMANCE specialist. Either that or maybe they are replacing more than what is indicated by Skoda

Definatly get the water pump done, had mine done 3 weeks ago and the impeller had broken up, belt was definalty on it's way out too.

Looks like I was charged way over the odds for the work at a independent specialist but it's done now. Still the price is nothing compared to the cost when they go.

Slightly OT

My vrs octy is due it's annual service and MOT. It's 4 yrs old and dealer is saying it needs a replacement cam belt, as recomended by Skoda  Is this correct?

Been quoted

Worthit - Skoda's new advice is 60k or 4 years whichever is sooner. I had mine done at 4 years on the basis that a failed cam belt is rather too expensive to take any chances over

Edit: new advice was AFAIK as a result of quite a few cam belt failures on the VAG 1.8T engine.

They've just phoned back with the prices

Major service

you don't want this to happen and possibly ruin your day, luckily mine came out whole but broke when removed .piccies091.jpg

who ever does it,make sure they use a brass impellored(sp) water pump.

when awesome did mine they used an AUDI TT 225 water pump.

Hi Jason

Not sure if the price quoted includes a water pump? (sorry, I'm not mechanically minded :o )

And this was mine at just 18,738 miles:

Ok, I get the idea!

Any recommendations for garages/dealers in E London/West Essex area? I normally use either Preston's or Trans City. Will ring TC tomorrow for a price.

God you guys really know how to worry someone with a plastic impellor. Mines already had the top end rebuilt before i bought it due to belt faliure (maybe water pump breakage?).

Hope its ok now or has had a brass one added. It was done at a skoda dealer.

Itll be a plastic one if its been done by a st(dealer)

depends when it was done because i am sure that i read on here that they are now using uprated ones that dont break up the same.

Just a quick update

Got the 40K service done at Star Performance, and also had them do a cam belt change kit (water pump, belt, tensioners, roller). They upgraded the brake fluid too

All for a very reasonable
