mpg felicia challenge

Featured Replies

Here's a challenge, albeit a sad one. I am getting 41 mpg approx from my 1.3 V reg felicia.

You sad *******, you may say but my journey to work generally keeps me going between 50 -70 on A303. My theory is that if you are going faster to work than that, you are even sadder than me !! No job is that good !!

This is with a broken thermostat housing which I am planning to replace some time soon. I am guessing that with engine running colder than normal I may get 44-45 mpg. Anyone done better ?

I used to get at least 40 mpg from my 1996 1.6. This was mixed driving. Best was 53 mpg on a long lazy run.

Andy

mine is a funny one. cuz i have changed the air intake and other bits, it can run realy economicly. however the mods do mean that when you put your foot down, it drinks like a fish.

Do fish drink? I would have though with all that water they swim around in they wouldnt be that thirsty:rofl:

Yeah, said the other day I got about 58mpg at 58mph on a mind numbing run in my wife's Felly. It was about two years old in good nick, she had it from new. Low fifties more realistic in it these days on a similar jaunt.

how??? how do you drive it. 56mph all the way?

Yep. I had to go from Yorkshire to the West Country and back. Had loads of time and did it for the helluvit. The main problem is lorries on the slow lane wanting to do 30 uphill and seventy down who resent you doing a constant 58 and 'encourage' you along by getting close enough to look at individual flies splatted on their grill.

One thing I did notice with a feather light foot is it cut out (fuel starvation?) once or twice which it hasn't done since. The trick is to get it rolling in top and hardly touch the throttle again.

If you mean generally then yeah, I get that on a run but I drive like a slug normally. Or keep within speed limits depending on your point of view.

even if the speed limit is wrong. or there are no signs to tell you what it is?

uk speed limits are a right mess.

mind you, i had to take a mate and her 4 year old girl to luton the other day. and was well suprised how much i can get out of a gallon when driving like an adult.

there is also a lot to be said for running your tyres at the correct pressure as well, i squeezed another 35 miles out of a tank this week after a bit of air

28psi

yeh now someone tells me, thank god i found the psi/bar button, i nearly had a 28bar tyre (about 400psi)

I'm getting a steady 58 mpg from my 1.9D Felicia. It's got 121,000 miles on the clock and I'm adding about 2,000 mile a month. Best wee car I ever had!

Im getting around 55mpg from my 1.9d its low milage might squeeze a couple more out when its loosened up!

I get 55mpg out of my 1.3 Favorit Estate on a run. Thats covered 129000 miles, the timing chain is very worn, but the car is a lot lighter than the Felicia.

my old favorit estate used to drink the dam stuff. mind you, that might have been partly my driving.

Hello

Getting the Skoda Felicia 1.3mpi to increase its MPG is a hard one considering the 1.6VW version has a slightly higher mpg. One of the reasons for this is the style of the engine. its a Push rod engine and as such has a longer engine turnover so when the car is idling it uses more rather than less than when the car is in motion. So long motorway drives use less as pr oven by well me!! I usually get 240m on

the old skud engines can pass an mot on carbs and no cat????????????

Yep the 1.3 Skoda engine can beat a lot of more modern engines hands down even without a cat. VW realised that the engine was so good they used a variant of the 105 to power their new polo as their OHC engine wasnt as good. I dare anyone to compare the Felicia 1.3 and the "superior" VW Felicia 1.6 and tell me which one produces more power per cc.

As for it being similar to a Renault 5 engine the only thing it had in common was that they both used liners. But then hundreds of engines do that. As for comparing the k series thats not really a fair comparison as it isnt the same cc and its very highly stressed. They are always blowing headgaskets due to such high compresion ratios. the power does not derive from the extra valves etc. That just really means you have to rev it harder to get into the powerband.

also you are the first person ive ever heard say that the VW 1.6 produces better fuel economy that the 1.3. Have you done something special to your 1.6?

agree with most, but i had a 1.3, and now have a 1.6 and the mpg is not that differant.

Put a new thermostat housing on 1.3 mpi felicia, temp gauge now reading normal, watch out all you oil burners, I'm on for a 50 mpg this week. 57mph here we go. How sad eh !!! I clearly need a new hobby.

I clearly need a new hobby.

some call this a hobby. my old dear calls it skoditas

eek

since changing jobs, i used to do a 40-60mph, 20 mile round trip, which cost me about £25 with weekend expeditions a week, worked out about 45mpg

now im doing stop start to 30mph, 4-6 mile round trips yet my petrol expenses are about the same, meaning im getting between 30-35mpg!! would i be better off with the 1.6 now then? ive also found the 1.3 a bit short of torque for going up hills with more than one person in the car...

Hmm, I'm tempted to nick my bro's skoda, service it and have a pop at this!

reckon 420 to a tank would be easily doable, but at 70, not 56- no point!

Since getting my felicia, ive started to drive, as my partner put it, "Like a grandad".

It isnt a concious thing, i just dont feel like in as much of a rush any more, and besides it does wonders for fuel economy.

I went over to sunny Bridlington the other weekend, so was about 160 miles on motorway and the same back, plus round town driving whilst there and two round trips of 30 miles each to drop/pick someone up from train station.

In total put £45 of petrol in, and then that also lasted me a few days of going to and from work.

Pretty impressed!

Only a few miles behind what my Citroen ZX 1.9D would do on that much fuel.

I'm getting 42/3 mpg on a 30 mile trip up A303, drinvg like a grandad mostly. There must be some more in the Felicia somewhere. Maybe I'll ditch the seats !!
