Wheres my sound gone??

Featured Replies

came to my PC t' other day and have no sound at all,

I am just using the MOBO's onboard sound, so after I checked the volume was turned up in the control panel, and made sure all my media players were not muted ,and tried a different set of speakers incase they had blown, I reinstalled the drivers for the mobo sound, still nothing.

Followed the Winhelp and nothing came up, no conflicts shown and everything is enabled and highlighted as working correctly.

Using XP64 and the mobo is the ASROCK 939 Dual Vsta. with C media latest audio drivers installed.

Tried a system restore but this did not correct my sound :(

It will be your audio chipset that will have died probably if you have tried re-installing the drivers by downloading the latest from manufacturers website and it didnt work. It does happen but is rare. Do you know which chipset you have (via, nvidia etc)? as you could try the drivers from there. They can sometimes be more up to date than the manufactures.

If non of the above works, u can get cheap pci sound cards that will do the job.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but make sure the speakers are plugged into the green hole on your computer. Also have you plugged some headphones in the front recently.

My manual only says this about the Audio :

Audio - C-Media CM6501 7.1 channel audio compliant with UAA architecture

Never used the front ports for audio, Infact never even connected them up when I built it due to the location of the tower, and the greens in the green ????

I have read on the net about skype interfering with sound on Vista, not sure if it'll be a similar thing on XP64, recomend a complete reinstall :(.

I will probably pick up a pci card and give it a whirl first though.

Ta for the help

Check it's not muted too

Had the onboard sound go on a few machines ( including 2 at home recently ). Fire a PCi in it and bobs yer uncle.

Popped a PCI in it tonight, just an old SB Live I had lying about and XP64 doesnt support it :(, typical

Lol , typical.

Are you sure XP 64 doesnt support it. It doesnt out of the box, you need to download the drivers from there website. I have been using a creative labs card in my main pc for a while, and its running xp64.

edit. creative dont support live anymore.

try these, these are the ones I use.

Thanks Manny,

Popped the card back in, D/L the above file but it wouldnt run for me as its SB Live not SBA, so done a web search and came up with this:|MG| Free Download - Creative Sound Blaster Live! x64 Driver 2.03.0005 Beta

Attempted the install and before it even got to the file transfer stage it gave me the blue screen of death.

computer rebooted and got to the usual safe mode/ Start Normally page, and the Keyboard wont respond ????

If i go into the bios menu the keyboard is working fine, and it just hangs on a black screen when it should be rebooting?

Any ideas, cant get on to do a system restore so i'm mighty confused, i hope its not Reinstall time :(

Does safe mode not work.

if your keyboard is USB, then you cant get into the startup menu to select safe mode. You will need to get one with a PS2 connector.

ok running the keyboard PS2 now, will let me push F11 so i can get into the boot menu or F2 to get into the BIOS menu, I select my Primary HDD the safe mode options screen comes up and the arrow keys wont work

Try 8 and 2 in the numeric keypad.

tried that as well, wont even let me press enter to start windows normally, I have to wait the 30 seconds till it starts itself before it moves on to hanging on a blank screen.

I smell a new HDD and install very shortly :D

If you have files on the non booting drive, as you say a fresh install onto another disk will help. Remove the current drive temporarily to avoid it being overwritten by mistake

Have you tried removing the SB Live yet.

yep, the card is out, I tried booting up with the CD ROM (XP64) but wuldnt even allow that, I went into the bios and disabled all other boot devices apart from the CDROM and still no joy. Will probably pop by and pick up a new HDD tomorrow and slap a fresh install on it, if i havent launched it by then ;)

Well, a few hours later, a few expletives and I managed to put another OS on the same HDD, not an ideal situation but its allowed me to get all the important stuff off the drive so I can reformat :(

the funny thing is, loaded the new OS and my onboard sound is now working fine  hey ho. Now i'm just trying to fid where my emails are stored so i can save them. Will put a new thread up for that though.
