I have ongoing problems with the EGR Valve on my 2000 Fabia, the valve has been changed once two years ago and the warning light did not show, but after a year back it came, the valve has been cleaned twice since then at a cost, but comes on very soon afterwards. Should I invest in a new valve and if so what would be the cost? I am at present reeling form a major bill of

Is it a 1.4 16V per chance?

Has the EGR port under the throttle body been cleaned? If this is blocked then it will bring up an EGR fault as the gasses cant go anywhere. Change the EGR valve as many times as you like it wont make a difference.

If it has been coming up with a load detection fault aswell there is a flash update for the engine ECU for this.

Many thanks for your reply. Yes it is a 1.4 16v

The light was on when I took it for a service and MOT last Wednesday 14 th Feb.

The service people who specialise in VW, Skoda, Audi and Seat cleaned the valve and the light had gone out, but yesterday Saturday on a trip of 50 miles it has come on again. Your comment regarding the changing of the valve worries me somewhat. Is there anything that can be done to cure the problem?

Thanks again for your reply.

I think I may have replied in the wrong place, so thanks again for your reply to my problem. Yes my Fabia is a 1.4 16 valve. I have had it serviced last Wednesday both the EGR Valve showed Flow to Small and the Throttle Valve showed, low base settings. The company I deal with are a reputable indepentant VW, Skoda, Audi and Seat specialists. Their report states that they Removed and Cleaned and Re Fitted the EGR Valve, and Removed and Cleaned the Trottle Body, Re Set the Basic Settings. The Engine Management Light was off when I picked up the car, but after a 50 mile trip on Saturday it has again come on. With this in mind do you think I should opt for a replacement EGR Valve or perhaps have the Throttle Valve serviced again. I was told that the two items were the worst they had seen. I only do local trips around 6000 a year and the car has done 37000 since new in March 2001. Thanks again for your input. Dave

To add to what Lummox said...

I also have a 1.4 16v 2000

I took it to the skoda garage with the engine warning light came on.

They replaced the EGR valve and I took it home.

The next day the light came on again, so I took it back.

An hour later, they said they had fully tested the car, it is perfect, there were no faults logged and if the light comes on to just ignore it (There are probably forum rules that prevent me from writing this bit).

Ignored the light for a few months until we were visiting parents, gave the car to a VW specalist who is a friend of the family.

He downloaded the errors that skoda said do not exist, said EGR fault, he cleared a pipe (did not say where but probably where Lummox said) and all was fine from then on.
