Power steering light on but no fault codes

Featured Replies

Anyone experienced having the power steering warning light come on (without any noticeable problems) and not log a fault code?

A friend had the light come on for one journey a couple of weeks ago with no loss in assistance but it hasn't happened again. As the car will be three years old next month, she took it to her (not too friendly) Skoda dealer and they said that there were no fault codes logged.

I'm wondering whether it was a case of "she's only a woman - fob her off now and cash in when the steering fails out of warranty" - oops! shouldn't say that, it's not very ethical ....

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a VAG-COM to check for fault codes (assuming they haven't been cleared - oops, there I go again). Any ideas folks?

It happened to me last week.

No fault codes shown.

Suggestions are a tired battery ( mine is ok )

Faulty sender ( £75 from dealers )

The dealer said it can come on if the car has been stood for a while, but if it goes out on re-starting don't worry about it.

hth.

Thanks for your comments, Mr Grumpy.

You may be onto something as she does not use the car much - it can stand of a week or more without being used. It's a 1.9 TDI so has a decent sized battery and starts OK. I know the sensor can give problems and is fairly easy to fit - hopefully it was just a one off - only time will tell.

hi there,

this light has come up on my vrs a few times, have found the battery is a little down on power thus kicking the light on. Light goes out after re starting engine. rechared battery off car and now ok.;)

Thanks guys - looks like giving the battery a few hours charge may do the trick. Let's hope it isn't anything more sinister ....

A different problem with the same post title.

2001 1.9tdi

Used steering rack fitted in August due to leak in previous one.

Power steering completley failed a few days ago, dash light is permenently on.

No fault codes are showing using vag-com.

Car starting OK , no battery problems.

I have searched the forum but cannot find the answer.

I am presuming sensor or pump.

How can I trace the fault or diagnose what part / cable is at fault without swapping parts, which means purchasing parts which may not be faulty.

I am quite happy to undertake any electrical mechanical work that is necessary.

Thanks ColinK

My boss had this issue:

He resolved it by going full lock to full lock.. Something pumps something out at full lock (not sure what) but it sorted it. Used to be a big issue on some classic motor, his dad recommended it. Works fine now!

Its free, give it a go..
