Aircon....... Advise sought

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I've just bought a 2001 tdi elegance and am trying to sort out a few of it's faults. First on my list is the aircon.

The light on the button works - so I went for a system regas - but that hasn't solved my problem.

What would be the next thing to check?

Is there anyway of telling if it's the evaporator temperature sensor that needs changing?

Cheers :)

Get it checked to see if any fault codes have been logged.

Thanks for the prompt reply -

When I had it regassed the chap used his diagnostic tool and said there weren't any fault codes other than for the engine temperature sensor which I'm also having problems with.

Did he use VAG COM?

Or was it just a fault code reader? VAG COM can do alot more than just read fault codes.

I'm not sure what type of fault code reader he used. I've managed to sweet talk my local dealer into doing a quick read of the fault codes on Saturday so hopefully that will identify the problem. Thanks for your reply:thumbup:

this would have been my first guess! but these are very expensive so you will be better off going to an air conditioning specialist rather than your skoda dealer, generally skoda dealers dont want to know when it comes to air-con, most will get in a specialist to do repairs, then charge you what they charged plus a little bit more!!!

i dont know an awefull lot about air-con, but, depending on what type of valves your air-con has fitted, you may need to have your air-con discharged before fitting the new sensor, then re-gassed afterwards!

The evap temp sensor isnt expensive. And nothing has to be degassed to change it.

Yup -

Fitting will be the expensive bit.

But a search may reveal more on this ;)

Not expensive at all, about £15. :)

One of my first posts here was asking for help after finding a fault code relating to the dreaded Evaporator Temperature Sensor and a very helpful Mr Lummox pointed me in the right direction with instructions on how to locate it and replace it which I did. :D

Since then there is now a helpful guide with pictures on this site:

ahh, do they have the oneway schrader valves fitted now then??:) that's certainly an improvement on the old skool vw air-con systems:D

No it doesn't sit in the high or low pressure side of the aircon & in fact it's not in the circuit at all, it's a push fit into the upper heater box. :)

Indeed.

Cheers for the advice guys :)

The skoda dealer's diagnostics just confirmed it was the evaporator temperature sensor. I'm surprised that the diagnostic tool the independant technician used didn't show the fault.

I'm off to fit it now with the help of the guide above,

Thanks everyone!
