110tdi turbo problem... i think its cured!

i have posted many a thread on this site regarding the famous turbo problems and touch wood i think i've sorted it and wanted to pass on the info. even if it helps 1 its of use.

started off by getting an original bosch MAF due to the german aftermarket part i got causing more problems than it cured! fitting the bosch item cured probally 75% of the problems but it was still numb with the odd limp mode being triggered so i ordered a new N75 valve and replaced any worn vacuum pipes i could see, they didn't have any leaks as i could tell but for what it cost for the pipe it was easier to elliminate it from the list. then just to be nosey i removed the EGR valve to check everything was moving freely and suprise suprise it was bunged up to the point it was trying to breath through a hole approx 2/3rds the size it should have been. so cleaned 142k worth of crap out of it, refitted and by god it pulls like a train! havent even fitted the chip back on it yet! gonna let it run for another week and see if its definately sorted but it all looks promising at the moment. i have been told that the 110 engine likes to be revved which helps keep the soot out of the turbo vanes so thats what i'm doing, it really is good fun! any way i've waffled long enough. just shows starting with the cheap and mundane items before you blow a packet on a turbo really does work.:D

And with all the money you save by using the great information on this site, you can join Freedom to help contribute to its upkeep

Thanks for the update though - its always good to get feedback, and even better if it helps someone else as you suggest.

Yep, these variable vane turbos really do benefit from a workout... blow all the crud away that could otherwise restrict the vanes from adjusting.

Glad yours is running better!

What chip might you be re-fitting out of interest?

I have heard about the resistor in a box debate and was weary as a mate was stung by one of these so called tuning boxes to the sum of a couple of hundred quid for his NSR250r. but i can't really complain it does exactly what it says and had this one recomended by a mate who had one on his passat for about 3 months and it did better mpg and went quicker.

I know there will be some1 on here that has some depressing info regarding this method so pls be gentle as not every1 can afford a

Yes these simple resistor mods seem to give the increase in performance and many people seem happy with them. They do cause/exacerbate the clogging of your EGR/turbo vane mechanisms though - which the digital boxes try to avoid by not overfuelling across the rev. range - just at higher RPM.

not a problem, junked the chip. after cleaning everything etc... it pulls like a train so no need for the chip.

How much for the pipes? Did you replace all the pipes around the n75 valve? plus the pipe that goes down to the turbo?

Cleaning the EGR - did you just remove the large rubber hose on the left hand side, or did you remove the unit from car and give it a much more complete cleaning?

Mine is still variable at best :-( Already had a new turbo, maf and n75

£180 for Remap from Shirestuning, and that was for a PD130 Tdi. Excellent service.

i tried every1 in wakefiled so i bought the pipe from a motor factors in manchester that we deal with through work, think they are called automotive? will try and find out but should be able to get it from just about anywhere off the roll, except don't waste your time with andrew pages they only sell it by the metre in sealed packets.

took the egr off the car completely as its the only way you can get to every part of the unit and you can check the calve works while your at it. there are a couple of bolts underneath that link a feed pipe to a flexi pipe, you need to remove this pipe before you can get to the 3 bolts on the egr as the pipe hides the top bolt.

hope this helps.

carefull tho as it deems when you fix 1 niggle another desides to pop up. the relay on the hazard switch has decided to do a clock impression every once in a while.

don't suppose any1 knows the part number for the new one?

oh well the joy of motoring continues....:o
