Golf gearbox failure

Featured Replies

My friends golf has just eaten its gearbox after just 50k it was only 4 years old! doesn't say alot for VW quality does it.

Luckily the local dealer said they could fit a VW exchange unit for

em dont think its just the golf that uses that gearbox....maybe wrong.

makes you wwonder when we all have VAG gearboxes

The 1.6 'rod change' box is a bit of a weak one. Not heard of that sort of failure in a while but quite often they can have troublesome changes.

You could have proberbly got a secondhand gearbox from a breakers for a lot less money including fitting.

My third gear went in my box, can't understand why.

the std gearbox is crap... it cant take much more than 250hp /280tq without dying.

my second box cost me 325 fitted. :D

when it breaks i will buy a third.

when it breaks i will buy a fourth.

......(repeat to fade)

she hasn't done anything yet so far we've got down to

My neighboor has a new Golf 1.6 Match and they have had 2 gearbox's fail in 4 month's. Car is only run around town mostly on school runs and never pushed hard. Don't know if it was the same fault on both gearbox's.

  • 3 years later...

while driving down the road last night i got to the bottom of my road when i heard a sharp metal on metal bang and felt the car suddenly jolt as if i had slamed the brakes on, i continued to drive and it happened again, after the second time the gearbox started making a whining sound, after i pulled over i noticed the gearbox oil was leaking out of the box somewhere, i couldnt tell exactly where abouts on the gearbox the oil were coming from. The car has done 116k with full dealers service history and a female owner previous, i got the car with 111k and had nothing but problems with it, so far i have spent around
